Telkom<\/a> has recently announced that it has kicked off a pilot project to trial digital subscriber line (DSL<\/a>) services of 20 megabits per second (Mbps) and 40Mbps. Initially only Telkom Internet will be allowed on this trial, but other ISPs say they want in.<\/p>\n

Last week (6 September 2012), the Internet Service Providers\u2019 Association (ISPA) had called on Telkom to allow ISPs other than TelkomInternet to participate in the trial<\/a>, arguing that Telkom Internet will have a competitive advantage if it is the only ISP to get access to this trial.<\/p>\n

MWEB<\/a> ISP CEO Derek Hershaw<\/a> said that they would definitely like to form part of Telkom\u2019s 20Mbps and 40Mbps DSL trial. \u201cAll ISP’s should be given the opportunity to take part. Telkom cannot just open this to their own ISP,\u201d said Hershaw.<\/p>\n

Hershaw added that MWEB will definitely launch a 20Mbps and 40Mbps uncapped DSL product as soon as Telkom launches the higher speed DSL offerings.<\/p>\n

Afrihost<\/a> director Greg Payne<\/a> also confirmed that they would love to be part of the trial, and that they will be launching a 40Mbps uncapped service as the service becomes available. \u201cOur clients are crying out for more speed so Afrihost would be very keen to offer these services to them,\u201d said Payne.<\/p>\n

Web Africa<\/a> CEO Tim Wyatt-Gunning<\/a> said that they are very keen to be part of the trial: \u201cWe have actively been pursuing it with Telkom for some time but, as yet, have received no firm response as to whether we might be included, and if not, why not.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wyatt-Gunning added that they would definitely offer VDSL Uncapped. \u201cOf course, since we have no indication of cost yet we are unable to propose any kind of pricing,\u201d said the Web Africa CEO.<\/p>\n

Vox Telecom<\/a> said that they would be keen to join the Telkom trial, and will, like their peers, launch uncapped 20Mbps and 40Mbps uncapped services.<\/p>\n
