<\/em><\/strong>Treyarch have kept no secrets about the fact that the developer is using a seven-year old engine to power the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops II; and along with that came a lot of criticism, but the developers don\u2019t really understand why.<\/p>\n

Treyarch has stated that the development team has tweaked and modified the engine significantly, but some gamers and industry people have called Black Ops II \u201cdated\u201d.<\/p>\n

In an interview with OXM, Black Ops Design Director David Vondehaar spoke out against the sceptical fans.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnybody who comes at the engine needs to remember it\u2019s the 60 frames they love in the first place, and we can make it beautiful \u2013 that\u2019s through years and years of working with the engine, improving upon it and improving the pipeline and improving our approach, our lighting rendering.<\/p>\n

People like to talk about the engine, but the truth of the matter is that this isn\u2019t like something that was invented six years ago. At this point that engine doesn\u2019t resemble anything like any engine \u2013 we\u2019ve ripped out the new UI system, the rendering and the lighting are all new, the core gameplay systems are all new.<\/p>\n

To me, it\u2019s like I never really understood. It runs at 60 [fps] and it\u2019s gorgeous. What exactly is there to be upset about with the engine?\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Black Ops II uses the IW Engine, which was first used for Call of Duty 2 in 2005. It has since been used in every COD game, but has been altered and enhanced for each release.<\/p>\n
