While John Carmack<\/a>, Gabe Newell<\/a>, and Blizzard’s Rob Pardo<\/a> probably won’t be getting it any time soon, everybody else is apparently buying up Windows 8 as fast as they can. According to Microsoft, the new OS has already sold four million upgrade versions since it launched last Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe level of embrace from enthusiasts, from people who want to get out there, is very, very high,\u201d Microsoft boss Steve Ballmer told attendees at the company’s BUILD conference yesterday.<\/p>\n

The impressive number of sales might be attributed in part to the OS’s cheap pricetag<\/a> – an upgrade version of Windows 8 costs just $39.99 (around R350) for a downloadable copy, and $69.99 (R600-700) for a box copy. For those people who bought new Windows 7-based PCs after June this year, it’s even cheaper at just $14.99 (R130) for a downloadable copy.<\/p>\n

Ballmer also reported that they’ve sold “tens of millions” of copies of Windows 8 to corporate clients, “who can upgrade when they want to, but have no time pressure to do that any time soon”.<\/p>\n

I suppose I’d better get myself a copy so I can be cool too, huh? Actually, the real reason is so I can get Xbox achievements playing Minesweeper. I’ll never<\/em> be cool.<\/p>\n
