Based very closely on Quake 3 Arena, Quake Live is a free to play multiplayer FPS that runs in a browser window. While mirroring the original Quake 3 closely, the game is 100 percent free to download and play, and can run on almost any PC.
Unfortunately, due to servers being hosted internationally, South African gamers were disappointed to discover that the average latency was around 400ms, making it virtually unplayable.

Internet Solutions (IS) has recently setup a number of local servers which allow players to enjoy low local latencies.

The game currently supports most major internet browsers, excluding Chrome. Not only is Quake Live compatible with Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7, but Linux and Mac OS users are also able to get in on the action.

In order to play users need to first sign up. Once this is done, a small plugin is downloaded and players are instructed to setup their profile followed by a tutorial. The process can be kicked off at QuakeLive.com.

Once players complete the tutorial stage, they can go online. When local users select ‘play online’ they will automatically be shown the selection of local servers – all marked with the SA flag – of which there are currently 6.

While the server is still quiet, it is new and it is expected that as more local gamers become aware of it, it will become more popular. There are currently a number of gameplay modes, including ‘team death match’ and the ever-popular ‘capture the flag’.

Discuss local Quake live servers in the forums

[3

post-4751","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-pc
["GET
