FPS classic Quake II celebrated its 15th anniversary on Thursday, and to celebrate Creative Director Tim Willits shared a few fun facts about the game\u2019s art and multiplayer design.<\/p>\n
For example, Quake II\u2019s 2D and 3D visuals were created entirely by only three artists. At the time Quake II rendered in OpenGL was a beautiful thing to behold, with gun flares and fire lighting the brown-grey metal environments \u2013 and gibs, oh so many gibs.<\/p>\n
Early in the game\u2019s development a suggested title was WOR, but id changed the name after concluding that the action-packed gameplay was more fitting of the Quake franchise.<\/p>\n
Willits\u2019 favourite multiplayer map (let\u2019s not kid around, everyone\u2019s favourite multiplayer map) The Edge has 50 trick jumps hidden in it, yet only two of these were actually purposely designed by Willits. The rest of them were uncovered by dedicated trick jumpers, who promptly posted compilation videos on Youtube.<\/p>\n
Other notable anniversaries this week: Warcraft II turned 17 yesterday (doesn\u2019t that make you feel old?) and id\u2019s Doom celebrates its 19-year anniversary on Monday.<\/p>\n
