If those who think the strategy genre has taken a fall in 2012, you\u2019d be mightily mistaken. This year has seen some strong games in in the strategy department.<\/p>\n

The following games are the highest rated games on Metacritic and GameRankings, respectively, in the strategy genre.<\/p>\n

XCOM: Enemy Unknown (PC) [89; 89]<\/h3>\n

One of the world\u2019s most revered strategy developers, Firaxis<\/a>, brought back XCOM this year to a new generation of gamers.<\/p>\n

Enemy Unknown redefined the 1994 classic strategy game UFO: Enemy Unknown, and features the traditional and fan-favourite gameplay that strategy enthusiasts have been craving.<\/p>\n

Total War: Shogun 2 \u2013 Fall of the Samurai (PC) [90; 86.63]<\/h3>\n

Total War: Shogun 2 \u2013 Fall of the Samurai was a long time coming, and finally scratched the itch of the Total War fans in 2012.<\/p>\n

The game has been a massive success, and even MyGaming\u2019s Nic Simmonds praised the Japanese feudal war sim in his Total War: Shogun 2 – Fall of the Samurai review<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\u201cAll in all, Shogun 2 \u2013 Fall of the Samurai is a very welcome addition to the franchise, and is highly recommended to its fans, as well as newcomers looking to get into the grand strategy genre.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion (PC) [82; 83.25]<\/h3>\n

Sins of a Solar Empire received its first stand-alone expansion in 2012, and to a good reception.<\/p>\n

The strategy game expanded with new factions, ships and other gameplay elements that added a host of new action and depth to the game.<\/p>\n

PC PowerPlay called it a \u201cgenre-transcending strategy game\u201d.<\/p>\n

\"Sins<\/a><\/p>\n

Pokemon Conquest (DS) [80; 81.68]<\/h3>\n

Japanese role-playing crossover Pok\u00e9mon Conquest made a subtle entry into the 2012 gaming market, but a huge impact on critics.<\/p>\n

The game takes place in a new region, Ransei, inspired by Japan\u2019s era of feudal warlords.<\/p>\n

The Tecmo Koei developed RPG blends a mish-mash of Pok\u00e9mon stars with characters from obscure Japanese war strategy series Nobunaga\u2019s Ambition.<\/p>\n

Players must use their Pok\u00e9mon to conquer the game\u2019s 17 kingdoms. Over 200 Pok\u00e9mon breeds are included in the game, including monsters from the latest Black and White generation.<\/p>\n

\"Pokemon<\/a><\/p>\n

Sid Meier\u2019s Civilization V: Gods & Kings (PC) [80; 80.86]<\/h3>\n

Gods & Kings introduces new gameplay content, as usual spanning the breadth of human civilisation, from founding the first Pantheon of the Gods and spreading religion across the world, to deploying spies in enemy cities to steal information and technology.<\/p>\n

Nine new civilizations, nine new wonders, three original scenarios, and dozens of new units, buildings, technologies and resources will be added with the expansion.<\/p>\n

MyGaming\u2019s Nic Simmonds said while getting some hands-on time with Gods & Kings<\/a>:<\/p>\n

In a way, Civilization V: Gods & Kings kind of feels like Firaxis\u2019 response to everyone who played Civilization V and complained that the game lacked the strategic depth of Civilization IV.<\/p>\n
