Penny Arcade probably needs no introduction among the Internet-dwelling gamer types.<\/p>\n

The veterans have done it again by highlighting how gaming is continuing down a dark path; perhaps losing sight of what was once core – enjoying a game experience without intrusion from the real world.<\/p>\n

After all, games are about getting away from mundane reality for just a little bit.<\/p>\n

By juxtaposing classic game Tetris with the current trend of requiring Internet connections, social integration, and enduring publishers fishing in your wallet for a few extra bucks, we can see just how ridiculous things have become.<\/p>\n

Are we as gamers suffering from “frogs in hot water” syndrome? Simply accepting that this is the way things are going to be from now on, until the next ridiculous scheme is shoe-horned into our gaming experience.<\/p>\n

We’ll kick up a fuss; the message boards will blaze with incendiary comments; the pre-orders will roll in; we’ll proclaim from the lofty rooftops of Metacritic and Amazon user review pages that the game is ruined just as we expected; but the publishers have already walked away with our money.<\/p>\n
