Gran Turismo 5 was until recently scheduled for its Japanese release in March, with a western release expected sometime around June-July. This changed last week when Sony announced that the game had been pushed back to an ominous “TBA”.<\/p>\n

The game, which has been in development since before the PS3 was even announced, is widely considered the holy grail of racing simulators, and will feature around 950 different uniquely modelled cars.<\/p>\n

Although Sony has yet to comment on a new western release date, US based online games retailer Gamestop <\/a>has listed the game for 1 November 2010.<\/p>\n

CEO of Polyphony Studios Kazunori Yamauchi recently told USA Today <\/a>that the game is about 90 percent complete, and that they are close to achieving their lofty goals, with close to 1000 cars and 70 tracks being playable in the final release<\/p>\n

Yamauchi also said that they want to make GT5 something truly special, and that most games these days have lost their individuality.<\/p>\n

“I want Gran Turismo 5 to be something really special so we are doing something to really revolutionize car games and racing games in Gran Turismo 5,” said Yamauchi, who claims at age 3 he could name every car on the road when his father drove him around.<\/p>\n

At CES last week Sony showed GT5 running in 3D, which in conjunction with the delay caused many to speculate that the game is being held back to optimize this technology before release. If Yamauchi’s comments are to be believed however, then this is likely not the cause for the delay.<\/p>\n

“For 3D, I think our level of expression in that technology is not really complete yet. We still have a lot of work in development that has to poured into that field.”<\/p>\n
