The new motherboards use a new version of UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) scaled to higher resolution monitors. EUFI offers users control of the BIOS options using the mouse and keyboard and a new, more colourful user interface.

Prior to UEFI, everything was a solid wall of text and navigable with the keyboard only. Sometimes the background was blue, sometimes it was black. Sometimes it had a theme to match the motherboard’s colours, but for the most part it was very simple.

The old BIOS interface.

However, to support new features and new hardware, the BIOS was replaced by UEFI, which by extension also allows the user to control features previously found in the BIOS through a UEFI interface on the Windows desktop. UEFI was first introduced into the consumer market in 2008 with MSI’s ClickBIOS. With the launch of Sandy Bridge for the desktop, many manufacturers adopted UEFI over the previous BIOS standard.

Gigabyte is now working on a new version of UEFI which can scale up or down according to your monitor’s resolution and it looks beautiful.

Gigabyte UEFI DualBIOS

There’s a lot of emphasis on presenting real-time data to the user. To the left there are useful statistics about your processor and memory frequency. To the right is some information about the entire system, including fan speeds and system voltages. If that’s at all accurate, it’ll enable you to gather information about your power supply’s performance in real-time.

Gigabyte has chosen to highlight some customisation options it’ll offer. Under “Setup User Options” you can configure what entries appear in the menus and sub-menus of the UEFI interface. If you choose to screw around with all the settings, you can add them all in. If only a few concern you, like the Base clock frequency, multiplier level or even controls for the integrated graphics core, then you can select those as your only options to clean things up.

Gigabyte’s new version of DualBIOS will debut with the new motherboards based on LGA 1150 and supporting all Intel Haswell processors.
