In mid-May, news emerged that only players who pre-ordered or paid for Metro: Last Light\u2019s Ranger Mode DLC<\/a> would gain access to the \u201chardcore\u201d difficulty mode; but it\u2019s been uncovered that the mode has been there all along.<\/p>\n

A Reddit user by the name of InkBubble played around with the game\u2019s registry value and found out how to unlock the mode, which 4A Games and Deep Silver wanted you to pay for.<\/p>\n

DSO Gaming provided a guide on how to access the Ranger Mode DLC.<\/p>\n

  1. Open regedit<\/li>\n
  2. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\/Software\/Valve\/Steam\/Apps\/43160<\/li>\n
  3. Create a new String value called ListOfInstalledDLC with Value data 222801<\/li>\n
  4. Open game \u2013 New game \u2013 Select Hard Ranger Mode<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The Metro: Last Light folder may have a different value than \u201c43160\u201d, but the rest of the guide remains the same.<\/p>\n

    While the mode is now playable regardless of whether you paid for it or not, it does spark the debate of where the industry is heading \u2013 should we really be paying for difficulty modes? Should we be paying for content that is available from the start, and just \u201chidden\u201d?<\/p>\n
