This retains the benefits of seeing your character from the third-person view while keeping the feel much closer to the range of motion and shooting precision you have in a first-person shooter.”

Hooker explained that GTA 5 utilises tricks learnt from games like Red Dead Redemption and Max Payne 3 in its combat, as characters will also react to gunfights by keeping their head down and moving quickly, rather than casually walking.

Producer and lead mission designer Imran Sarwar also explained some of the customisation options for weapons that players will have.

“The player has access to a wide range of modifications, such as extended clips that allow you to fire more ammo between reloads, grips to improve your accuracy, weapon tints to colour your guns, flashlights, scopes, and suppressors,” said Sarwar. “Attachments such as suppressors allow the player to adapt their approach to some missions and take a stealth option. It’s all part of broadening the range of tactical options for the player.”

The vast customisation options also extend to the vehicles, such as the ability to add cosmetic items like body kits, paint jobs/finishes, wheels, exhaust tips, window tints, tyre smoke colour, bull-bars and extra lights, while gameplay tweaks include brakes, engine tuning, suspension, horns, bulletproof tyres and panel armour.

“We wanted to expand it and integrate it more deeply into the game so that it would seamlessly slot in with everything else that the player can do in the world,” explained Sarwar. “Some missions ask you to customize vehicles in certain ways, and we have taken vehicle customization in general a lot further than we did in San Andreas.”

Grand Theft Auto V will arrive in stores on 17 September 2013 for PS3 and Xbox 360.
