AMD’s Kaveri APU is going to be a big moment for the company, the point where they come to the crossroads and assess if what they’re doing will be good enough to change their underdog status.<\/p>\n
Kaveri will be the first brand new APU in a while, based on the company’s Steamroller architecture along with its Graphics Core Next architecture for the built-in GPU.<\/p>\n
AMD originally said the time frame for a delivery of Kaveri silicon to the public was going to be 2H 2013, but that has now been officially pushed back to a Q1 2014 launch. The company has released a press statement detailing the new launch periods, but did not give any information about why the product was delayed.<\/p>\n
AMD\u2019s \u2018Kaveri\u2019 high-performance APU remains on track and will start shipping to customers in Q4 2013, with first public availability in the desktop component channel very early in Q1 2014.<\/p>\n
\u2018Kaveri\u2019 features up to four \u2018Steamroller\u2019 x86 cores, major heterogeneous computing enhancements, and a discrete-level Graphics Core Next (GCN) implementation \u2013 AMD\u2019s first high-performance APU to offer GCN. \u2018Kaveri\u2019 will be initially offered in the FM2+ package for desktop PCs.<\/p>\n
Mobile \u2018Kaveri\u2019 products will be available later in the first half of 2014.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Its entirely possible that the company is setting the shipping and launch dates back to allow more room for their shipment of APUs designed for use in the Xbox One and Playstation 4. Both consoles are slated for a Holiday 2013 launch and some retailers have tried to set some dates on availability – most places hint at a November launch for the Xbox One, while the PS4 is rumoured to be launching in December.<\/p>\n
