After Microsoft announced that the roll out of the console will extend into 2014 for 13 markets<\/a> (SA being one of them), Microsoft director of marketing Albert Penello\u00a0explained more details about the delay and importation options.<\/p>\n

Penello said that while gamers can import Xbox One from other regions, as the consoles are \u201cregion-free\u201d, there are payment restrictions when buying on Xbox Live during the roll out period.<\/p>\n

“There needs to be a valid payment method corresponding to a supported launch country in order for any transactions to occur over Xbox Live, and some content may not be accessible outside launch markets due to geographic content restrictions imposed by content right holders.”<\/p>\n

So players can use disc-based games on imported consoles, just until the Xbox Live marketplace for that region is active, then digital games can be purchased.<\/p>\n

Regarding the issue of the delay, a NeoGAF user suggested that Microsoft was discouraging importing of consoles from other regions, but Penello squashed that rumour.<\/p>\n

“Launch volumes are not really an issue,\u201d said Penello. \u201cThis was simply a software issue in terms of getting local language and voice support in the dash. It’s pretty straightforward, but disappointing I know for people who are missing launch.”<\/p>\n

“Obviously, I support people waiting for the official supported launch in the affected markets for the best experience,” he added.<\/p>\n
