SASCOC is the controlling body for all high performance sport in South Africa and was formed as a Section 21 Company (non-profit) by representatives of all the sports bodies at a general meeting held on 27 November 2004. As a result, SASCOC is also responsible for awarding South African national team Protea colours.

For SA gaming, the MSSA is the equivalent South African Rugby Union (SARU) or South African Football Association (SAFA).

Colin Webster, President of MSSA, told MyGaming that the match was organised through a liaison at eSports Mexico, the Mexican equivalent of the MSSA. Both eSports Mexico and MSSA are members of the International eSports Federation (IeSF), which was founded to act as a global organisation to ensure that eSports is accredited and recognised like other sports.

Webster said that as far as he is concerned, the MSSA followed the correct procedures to organise the match, and questions around the quality of the Mexican team should be answered by eSport Mexico.

The South African players involved in the match have reportedly been quiet, which spurred Lazygamer to investigate further.

An MSSA contract for players was dug up and Lazygamer identified a few notable clauses and lambasted the MSSA. The contractual clauses in question are reproduced below for the sake of accuracy:

5. I acknowledge that if I am interviewed while I am member of a national team, I shall:

Wear official team kit, as per the Regulations, and

Always thank the MSSA, and all sponsors associated with the event, and

Never criticize the event, other competitors, officials, MSSA or any body to which the MSSA is affiliated, or any of their policies.

8. I undertake that I shall not make any statements in any way about the team, selection process, etc., unless it is at the MSSA’s direction. Should I make any such statements I acknowledge that I shall be liable for a fine not exceeding R15,000.00 as imposed by the Management Board of the MSSA and forfeit any colours that I may have.

11. I acknowledge that as soon as I am selected as a member of the team, I shall resign from all groups and organisations that are not affiliated to the MSSA if such groups and organisations also claim to play the disciplines as promoted by the MSSA. Should I fail to immediately resign, and copy the MSSA accordingly, I acknowledge that I shall be liable for a fine not exceeding R15,000.00 as imposed by the Management Board of the MSSA and forfeit any colours that I may have.

MyGaming asked Webster about the validity of the article itself, along with the reasons why these clauses are in place. “The article seems to be a little malicious. Not only does the author not understand the clauses, but [the author] gives very inaccurate interpretations,” said Webster.

Part of the MSSA mandate is to hold national team trials, and make recommendations to SASCOC for players to be granted national team colours (the Protea badge). This means players will become representatives of South African sports in general, as governed by SASCOC, explained Webster.

As one might expect, with this honour comes a responsibility to conduct oneself in a way that does not bring South African sport and the Protea badge into disrepute. Found here in an overview of the SASCOC National Coloures Regulations.

5 & 8. Interview behaviour and statements

Regarding clauses 5 and 8, whereby players are required to refrain from criticising events, thank those involved, and are liable for a fine when making statements about the national team and its selection process, Webster said “First, it is common courtesy, and second it is in the SASCOC rules.”

This goes back to the point about players representing South Africa and the Protea colours, and doing things that bring either into disrepute is not acceptable under SASCOC rules. This is true for all South African national team sports, and not just eSports, explained Webster.

Webster also explained that selection committee processes are a complicated matter, and while MSSA makes its recommendations, it is SASCOC who decides who is awarded national team colours. Players may simply not know enough about the process to make accurate statements, and these clauses are in place to protect both the player and the reputation of SA sport.

11. Affiliated clubs

Regarding clause 11 on remaining a member of an affiliated club, Webster explained that members of the National Team can only be members of MSSA affiliated clubs. This is because officially representing South Africa as a Protea sportsman comes with a number of responsibilities, and the MSSA has a mandate from SASCOC to ensure these are met. This is not merely an MSSA rule, but one passed down from SASCOC.

Being part of an affiliated club also means that players are afforded certain rights and privileges under the MSSA.

Webster explained that this clause is also to prevent ambush marketing, whereby a player who attends events sponsored by the MSSA and its partners might use the opportunity to promote their own non-affiliated organisation or club.

Webster explained that this clause does not prevent national team players from entering into competitions, tournaments, and leagues, as long as they do so under the banner of their affiliated club.

National Team player contracts

Wrapping up the discussion, Webster said that the player contracts have evolved over the years, and some of the clauses have been put in place in reaction to poor behaviour in the past.

Webster said that the player contract does not infringe on freedom of speech and that players are required to indicate they sought independent legal advice on the contract before signing.

If players do not like the clauses in the contract, they are not forced to sign it – they will also not be awarded national team colours nor given the opportunity to officially represent South Africa, said Webster.

Webster clarified that the MSSA is the only governing body for South African eSports in the eyes of SASCOC – and this is true of all other sports who only have one elected governing body. Those who wish to improve the operations of the MSSA and the SA national eSports teams are welcome to work with the organisation by getting involved and standing for election to the committee, said Webster.

(Additional reporting by Jeremy Proome)

More SA gaming news

SA Xbox Live Gold: September free games revealed

SA’s Broforce and the “tsunami of bromance”

SA game Broforce Greenlit on Steam

Incredible Connection PS4 pre-order voucher deal

GTA 5: where’s the cheapest in SA?

Xbox One playable at rAge 2013

Mind Sports South Africa elaborates on the issues raised with regards to its rules and policies

[2
2218,1611,21,9291,2070,2752,5793,5794
post-58324","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-business","tag-dota-2","tag-esports","tag-headline","tag-mind-sports-south-africa","tag-mssa","tag-sa-gaming-market","tag-sa-gaming-news","tag-sa-news
["GET
