There are those who are for something, and those against. The issue of the PlayStation 3’s Trophy system and the Xbox 360’s Achievements are one of those issues.

On the one side, there are people who want nothing to do with them, and are somehow able to resist and ignore the allure of those magical little pop-ups. Generally speaking, they actively despise the entire meta-game system and wish that it had never been invented.

On the other side are those in favour. They like the idea of having their in-game accomplishments recognised, and actively pursue all the far-out, non storyline related achievements. They consult guides, find every obscurely hidden collectable, grind areas to meet kill quotas, and just generally play the game according to the Trophy list.

Myself? Well generally I fall into the latter category. To me, there is nothing better than seeing a trophy notification pop up in the corner of the screen, especially if it is the platinum trophy that follows hours of riding all around the city trying to kill 200 well hidden pigeons.

So, without further ado, a brief list of six of the most annoying in-game Trophies (or Achievements, if you are an Xbox player).

1. Collectables

In other words, “Find 200 pieces of intel/pigeons/treasure/ancient scrolls”. Nobody can really manage to collect everything in the game without a guide. I mean, sure, if you had unlimited time and willpower, you could in theory pore over every single nook and cranny in the game, in search of the rarest of glinting pieces of shiny treasure. It’s just not going to happen without a guide.

2. Online

In other words, “Play and win 25 games of Capture the Flag” or “Reach the top 10% of players for the week”. These games types used to be impossible, back before the days of reasonable uncapped internet, but now they are just annoying. From killing a certain number of people online (Resistance 2), to spending enough time to reach the highest rank available, online trophies are just annoying. Online trophies revert back to “impossible” status when the online community dies off, either due to lack of interest or the removal of online servers by the developers.

3. Kill Counts

In other words, “Kill 5 000 enemies on stage 13, using only your bare fists”. Trophies which require a certain amount of kills take the worst part of MMORPGS (the repetitive actions needed to accumulate wealth and experience AKA grinding) and transplant them into the single player experience. They are usually quite possible, with a little time investment, but annoying nonetheless.

4. Impossible

In other words, “Finish Through the Fire and Flames on Expert with greater than 85% of notes hit”. Ok so technically one would be able to achieve this with enough practise, but more realistically, the average person’s fingers and reflexes are simply not fast enough for the fret melting intensity of that song. Also impossible are the above mentioned games where it is literally impossible to obtain a Trophy, for example when you are unable to play online (due to the removal of the servers by the developers).

5. Buy-More Hardware

In other words, “Perform as four drummers in a single song”. It is extremely unlikely that people will have enough equipment for every trophy that requires it. For the above example, I am absolutely certain that nobody has four Guitar Hero or Rock Band drum kits just lying around at their house. So you know what that means: either find new friends or get saving for new equipment.

6. Hardest Difficulty

In other words, “Finish the game on “impossible” difficulty”. You knew it was coming when you saw that unlockable higher difficulty, and sure enough, the hidden trophy that is listed right after you “Finish the Game” confirms your suspicion. Get ready for the ride of your life, with harder, smarter enemies, less health and ammo, and in some instances less cover. Enjoy!
It all depends on the game though. If the game is fun enough, then there is absolutely no problem at all in playing online for long enough to achieve the highest rank. Likewise, if the game is awful, simply finishing the game will be enough of a challenge, and you will not be likely to go back and play it enough to get all the side-quest trophies.

Do you shamelessly grind after trophies to add to your virtual cabinet? Are you a “Gamerscore Whore?” Or could you not be bothered spending hours chasing after what are essentially meaningless accolades? Share your thoughts in the forums.

[20

post-5844","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-features
["GET
