Global illumination is a physics-based algorithm to calculate how virtual light beams might interact with an environment. If a dark room is lit with a single light source in the middle of it, the simulation accurately reflects the light off particular surfaces and also works out where shadows should be.

Like many of the technologies in Gameworks, GI Works is scalable and is capable of running on mobile devices for better-looking games. The demo that was shown was in a museum with dinosaur skeletons. Not only was the light perfectly simulated, but objects that were identified as being reflective automatically interacted with surrounding light sources and reflected that light accurately.

Adding in extra lights to the scene also reduced the amount of shadows present, increased the amount of light in the room and created extra reflections. Lights of different colours could also bleed into one another, which is particularly impressive.

Optix for accurate light rendering

Bungie first to use Optix in Destiny

Lastly, Optix is a new rendering engine for light. GI Works relies on Optix and Optix now handles ray tracing on objects, Ambient Occlusion to properly scatter light in environments, collision detection of light particles (its what makes the light blending possible) and procedural surfaces, where Optix will task the GPU with re-drawing light on an object as the locations of shadows on the object change.

The first game to support and use Optix is Bungie’s Destiny, where Optix does things like work out how many light particles will hit an object and how bright or dark the textures of that object should be. The interesting bit is that the calculations for Optix are not done on the fly.

Instead, the data is fed into a Tesla-powered Nvidia GPU server farm that Bungie keeps on-hand to pre-render their environments. Nvidia says that all the pre-rendering and computation of a complex scene on the GPU farm using Optix lighting can be done in 78 seconds, which includes the entire environment.

When Microsoft said that the Xbox Live Cloud could be used for rendering new effects the Xbox One wasn’t capable of, this is an example of what they would be able to do – pre-render light rays in any environment and feed that data into the game while the level is loading.

While Gameworks is only the first step for Nvidia’s continued dominance in its relationships with game developers, it’s effectiveness is limited to how many gamers use Geforce hardware and how many developers elect to pick it up and incorporate it into their game.

Developers will have to make the decision whether to try deliver their game in as authentic an experience on any compatible hardware, or only offer the full monty on Geforce hardware, and gamers will have to make their decision as to which direction they want their games to go visually.

More Hardware news:

AMD posts first profit in over a year

Nvidia GSync to boost gaming monitor performance

Nvidia Geforce GTX780 Ti unveiled – “fastest ever built”

Nvidia Shield, GeForce bundles revealed

Official R9 290X benchmarks: AMD

[7
9983,9982,11553,11554,11556,11524,11552,21,9978,45,11555,11519,2120,11520,11488,11521,10794
post-59438","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-hardware","tag-digital-ira","tag-faceworks","tag-flameworks","tag-flex","tag-flex-physx","tag-gameworks-library","tag-gi-works","tag-headline","tag-kepler","tag-nvidia","tag-nvidia-flex","tag-nvidia-gameworks","tag-nvidia-kepler","tag-nvidia-optix","tag-nvidia-physx","tag-optix","tag-tegra-5
["GET
