Doom creator and industry legend, John Carmack\u00a0 has decided to quit id Software – the studio he co-founded – to focus his attention on his place at Oculus VR.<\/p>\n
According to GameIndustry.biz, id studio director Tim Willits confirmed that Carmack has left the company, entirely.<\/p>\n
Carmack said on Twitter that he had wanted to stay on as a technical adviser, “but it just didn’t work out. Probably for the best, as the divided focus was challenging.”<\/p>\n
Carmack joined the Oculus VR team back in August, acting in the role of chief technology officer.<\/p>\n
When he joined the company, id parent company, Bethesda Softworks, indicated that Carmack’s role at Oculus would not affect his position at id – though things have now obviously changed.<\/p>\n
“Carmack, who has become interested in focusing on things other than game development at id, has resigned from the studio,” id’s Willits told GameIndustry.biz.<\/p>\n
“John’s work on id Tech 5 and the technology for the current development work at id is complete, and his departure will not affect any current projects.”<\/p>\n
