Valve is committed to working with Oculus to drive PC-based VR in the market and is collaborating with them on various projects.<\/p>\n<p>Emerging from the VR workshop, Valve reckons that proper, affordable consumer-grade VR hardware will be available within 2 years &#8211; in 2015 or soon after.<\/p>\n<p>Valve envisions PC being the hotbed for VR development, with Linux, Windows, and OSX being the main platforms. Rapid evolution is expected in the field, as demonstrated with the ongoing <a title=\"Oculus Rift prototype greatly improved\" href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/gadgets\/61293-oculus-rift-prototype-greatly-improved.html\">development of the Oculus Rift<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Valve wants to encourage many developers and independent hardware vendors to get involved, with complete freedom to innovate.<\/p>\n<p>According to slides from the workshops, the following challenges remain:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wider field of view<\/li>\n<li>Better resolution<\/li>\n<li>Low pixel persistence (ghosting)<\/li>\n<li>High refresh rate<\/li>\n<li>Global display<\/li>\n<li>Optics and optical calibration<\/li>\n<li>Reliable tracking<\/li>\n<li>Low latency<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Looking to 2015, Valve discussed what would be feasible for a consumer head-mounted VR display.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>20ms latency<\/li>\n<li>3ms pixel persistence<\/li>\n<li>95Hz refresh rate<\/li>\n<li>110-degree field of view<\/li>\n<li>1,000 x 1,000 pixel resolution<\/li>\n<li>High-quality, well-calibrated optics<\/li>\n<li>Tracking:\n<ul>\n<li>millimeter-accurate resolution translation<\/li>\n<li>quarter-degree-accurate rotation<\/li>\n<li>volume of roughly 2 meters cubed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Valve outlined stuff that still needs to be done for a good consumer grade VR headset:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Improve key elements:\n<ul>\n<li>Up to 100x resolution needed<\/li>\n<li>Optics are far from optimal<\/li>\n<li>Head tracking not solved<\/li>\n<li>Eye tracking not solved<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Solve per-user lens positioning (IPD, eye relief)<\/li>\n<li>Get rid of the tether (wireless)<\/li>\n<li>Display manufacturers creating VR optimised panels<\/li>\n<li>3D audio<\/li>\n<li>Haptic feedback<\/li>\n<li>Body tracking<\/li>\n<li>Integration of inputs and game design in VR<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What do you think of the push to VR gaming?
