This is a proud component of a console system that popularised video gaming in the home.<\/p>\n<p>The only design hallmark (and honestly, there isn&#8217;t much to go on here) that was able to transcend the gaming times is the classic directional joystick which we still have in various forms, such as analogue thumbsticks.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Nintendo Famicom (1983)<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_61548\" style=\"width: 607px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Famicom-Controllers.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-61548\" class=\" wp-image-61548\" alt=\"Famicom controllers\" src=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Famicom-Controllers.jpg\" width=\"597\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Famicom-Controllers.jpg 800w, https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Famicom-Controllers-600x396.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 597px) 100vw, 597px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-61548\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Famicom controllers<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Nintendo Famicom controller passed down one of the most influential designs that is today a common family trait amongst all video game controllers: the directional pad, or D-pad.<\/p>\n<p>The origins of this design can even be traced further back to the one of the first Nintendo electronic products: the Game &amp; Watch Donkey Kong portable game system.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Nintendo Super Famicom (1990)<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_61549\" style=\"width: 608px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Super-Famicom-Controller.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-61549\" class=\" wp-image-61549\" alt=\"Super Famicom controller\" src=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Super-Famicom-Controller.jpg\" width=\"598\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Super-Famicom-Controller.jpg 800w, https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Super-Famicom-Controller-267x150.jpg 267w, https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Super-Famicom-Controller-600x337.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Super-Famicom-Controller-625x350.jpg 625w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 598px) 100vw, 598px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-61549\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Super Famicom controller<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Super Famicom controller featured an additional 2 buttons compared to the original Famicom controller, forming a diamond shape, and providing additional control options by slapping on 2 shoulder buttons.<\/p>\n<p>The face and shoulder buttons are two features which today&#8217;s modern controllers still have, and most games would not be playable without these.<\/p>\n<p>Also, whether by mere coincidence or not, the colors of the 4 face buttons of the PAL version of the console can still be seen on Xbox controllers today.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Sony Playstation (1994)<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_61550\" style=\"width: 609px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/PSX-DualShock-Controller-playstation-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-61550\" class=\" wp-image-61550\" alt=\"PlayStation One Dual Shock controller\" src=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/PSX-DualShock-Controller-playstation-1.jpg\" width=\"599\" height=\"469\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/PSX-DualShock-Controller-playstation-1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/PSX-DualShock-Controller-playstation-1-600x470.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 599px) 100vw, 599px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-61550\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PlayStation One Dual Shock controller<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The ergonomic handle shape is what marks a modern video game controller, and it&#8217;s the DualShock One controller that introduced this concept.<\/p>\n<p>Add to that the ingenuity of twin analog sticks, and you have yourself a proud great-great grandfather of today\u2019s controllers.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Nintendo 64 (1996)<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_61552\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Nintendo-N64-Rumble-Pak.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-61552\" class=\" wp-image-61552\" alt=\"Nintendo N64 Rumble Pak attached to N64 controller\" src=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Nintendo-N64-Rumble-Pak.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"461\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Nintendo-N64-Rumble-Pak.jpg 800w, https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Nintendo-N64-Rumble-Pak-600x461.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-61552\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nintendo 64 Rumble Pak attached to N64 controller<\/p><\/div>\n<p>With the Nintendo 64 controller, the innovation of note was to be found in one of its accessories.<\/p>\n<p>The RumblePak for the N64 controller was the first time home video game players would be able to receive direct feedback into their hands as events happened on screen &#8211; a precursor of today&#8217;s ubiquitous vibration haptic feedback.<\/p>\n<p>Although it cannot be called the grand-daddy of feedback technology, as earlier arcade games did implement this technology, it can definitely be seen as the trendsetter in the home.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Wii (2006)<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_61553\" style=\"width: 608px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Wii-remote-WiiMote-Nintendo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-61553\" class=\" wp-image-61553\" alt=\"WiiMote\" src=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Wii-remote-WiiMote-Nintendo.jpg\" width=\"598\" height=\"455\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Wii-remote-WiiMote-Nintendo.jpg 800w, https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Wii-remote-WiiMote-Nintendo-600x456.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 598px) 100vw, 598px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-61553\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wiimote<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Wiimote showed us how to do more than just hold a controller.<\/p>\n<p>Motion controlled gaming has not fully infiltrated our gaming habits, but the fact that Nintendo&#8217;s competitor&#8217;s consoles began to support motion inputs in some way proves that the Wii DNA has managed to stay with the evolution of controllers.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">iPhone (2007)<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_61554\" style=\"width: 608px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/iPhone-2G-iPhone-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-61554\" class=\" wp-image-61554\" alt=\"iPhone\" src=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/iPhone-2G-iPhone-1.jpg\" width=\"598\" height=\"315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/iPhone-2G-iPhone-1.jpg 730w, https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/iPhone-2G-iPhone-1-600x316.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 598px) 100vw, 598px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-61554\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">iPhone<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Here\u2019s a cheat. This is not a video game console controller.<\/p>\n<p>It did however introduce touchscreen mechanics for games, something which a couple of years later has been implemented by the likes of the Wii U gamepad, Playstation 4\u2019s Dualshock 4, the Playstation Vita, and Microsoft through its SmartGlass tablet PC bolt-on.<\/p>\n<p>Do you have fond memories of the controllers of yore?
