The virtual reality (VR) headset space is getting interesting, with Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley having outed the long-rumoured Sony VR headset project<\/a> during a Reddit AMAA session<\/a>.<\/p>\n

When asked about plans to implement VR in the upcoming MMO EverQuest Next, Smedley said:<\/p>\n

Hearing good things about 2 competitors.. one of which actually comes from Sony. So I’m thinking this is real and we may have our Snowcrash after all.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

“Snowcrash” refers to a book by Neal Stephenson<\/a>, witten in 1992, which covers a lot of science-fiction ground, including the vision of a virtual-reality system that will succeed the current-day Internet.<\/p>\n

Sony has been dabbling in head-mounted displays<\/a> for a while now, and although the units could playback 3D video, they have not fully stepped into the realm of gaming grade stereoscopic 3D.<\/p>\n

Let’s hope that any potential Sony VR headset doesn’t carry a similar price tag of R7,500.<\/p>\n
