AMD has announced the introduction of its AM1 platform featuring the quad-core and dual-core Kabini APU.<\/p>\n
\u201cCombined with motherboards from leading manufacturers, the new AM1 platform will deliver award winning Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture and AMD Jaguar CPU cores,\u201d said the company in a statement.<\/p>\n
The platform, which is promised to be priced \u201ccompellingly\u201d, will also feature USB 3.0 and SATA 6GB\/s support along with microATX and miniITX motherboards.<\/p>\n
The AM1 platform and its accompanying Kabini APUs are targeting the low-end of the desktop market, as well as low-power, sub-notebook, ultra-thin, and tablet devices.<\/p>\n
AMD said that desktop motherboard manufacturers ASRock, ASUS, BIOSTAR, ECS, Gigabyte and MSI are all set to deliver a range of next-generation motherboards to support the native USB 3.0 and SATA 6GB\/s for AMD Athlon and Sempron-series APUs for the AM1 platform.<\/p>\n
Global availability is expected on April 9.<\/p>\n
Kabini may ring some bells, as it is from the the Jaguar architecture family. The PS4 and Xbox One use 8-core semi-custom Jaguar-derived APUs. Don’t expect these AM1 platform APUs to be a next-gen console competitor.<\/p>\n
