{"id":63985,"date":"2014-05-05T08:06:02","date_gmt":"2014-05-05T06:06:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/?p=63985"},"modified":"2014-05-05T08:10:24","modified_gmt":"2014-05-05T06:10:24","slug":"win-r100-000-by-beating-pac-man-with-ai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/business\/63985-win-r100-000-by-beating-pac-man-with-ai","title":{"rendered":"Win R100 000 by beating Pac-Man, with AI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Entelect has announced its third annual artificial intelligence (AI)\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/challenge.entelect.co.za\/\" target=\"_blank\">programming challenge<\/a>, offering a R100,000 prize for the hacker that comes up with the best competitive Pac-Man-playing AI.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the company offered its R100k prize to the programmer that built the winning AI for a modified version of the classic Nintendo Family Computer game, Battle City.<\/p>\n<p>The competition is run in association with NAG Magazine and, as before, the finals will be played at this year\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/news\/62804-rage-expo-nag-lan-2014-ticket-prices-announced.html\">rAge Expo<\/a>, held on 4 October 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Entelect will also host a special event on 13 September 2014 at the Fire &amp; Ice Hotel in Melrose Arch, where it said it will announce the final 8 contestants in front of gaming and technology media.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IiyEw0qLOPE?rel=0\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>A big change from previous years is that contestants will be ranked into 2 different pools before the competition begins.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEntrants will be paired off against each other under the supervision of an automated mediator program ,which will rank the entrants into one of two pools based on their performance,\u201d the terms &amp; conditions policy of the competition says.<\/p>\n<p>AIs in the two pools will then be pitted against one another in a double-elimination style tournament to determine the final 4 contestants for that pool.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce allocated to a pool, entrants will not be allowed to be moved into a different pool,\u201d Entelect said. \u201cEntrants will be notified of their pools no later than 1 September 2014.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The grand prize for Pool A (the advanced pool) is R100,000 cash, with runner up prizes to be announced.<\/p>\n<p>The beginner pool, Pool B, has a grand prize of R50,000 cash.
