Despite its promise to launch new consoles in emerging markets<\/a>, Nintendo said it will not launch a successor to its Wii U in the near future, and definitely not until it has satisfied its current customers.<\/p>\n

There is a silver lining though, as Nintendo said work on the latest console’s successor has begun, according to a Nintendo Q&A session<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“Once we launch a new platform, we naturally start to prepare for the next one. As it takes several years to develop a single platform, if you ask us whether we are preparing for our next system, then the correct response will be that we are always developing new hardware,” said Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata.<\/p>\n

“I believe that launching new hardware will not produce good results unless we first make sure that those who have already purchased our platforms are satisfied,” he said.<\/p>\n

The Wii U launched in November 2012 and has currently sold 6.1 million units.<\/p>\n
