Hit particularly badly were hardware sales, which plummeted 20 percent this May over last May, earning $241.5 million. This is a worrying sign for the likes of Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo, as it indicates a slowdown in console sales which could be a sign that their current consoles are beginning the home stretch of their life span.

On the bright side, game sales saw a modest 4 percent increase over May 2009, thanks mostly to Red Dead Redemption and Super Mario Galaxy which both sold very well. Console accessory revenue was also up 3 percent over May 2009.

Game industry continues to decline in 2010

May’s week performance puts the industry 10 percent behind where it was at the same time in 2009, and 2009 was considered a bad year following 2008. For the year, hardware is down 10 percent on where it was at the same time in 2009, which is understandable as most gamers buy one console and manufacturers are going to run out of gamers to sell to at some point. However, software sales are down 6 percent for the year, which is worrying because 2010’s console install base is higher than 2009s, so there should be more gamers to sell games to, which should mean more games sold.

May 2010 console game sales charts

1.
