It’s about time to take the arena FPS back to its roots, according to new kid on the block: Toxikk.<\/p>\n

The PC-based arena first-person-shooter makes no effort to be subtle about it – the FPS games you are playing today have lost their way, and the new Unreal Engine title\u00a0is here to lead you back onto the path of righteousness.<\/p>\n

No classes, no levelling, no regenerating health, no cover systems, no iron sight aiming, no reload, no perks, and, rather cheekily, no free-to-play.<\/p>\n

“Frag like its 1999” claim the team behind the game: Reakktor Studios<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Don’t worry, with all the “no’s” there are some things the game does have: it does allow double-jumping, vehicles, the ability to carry nine weapons at once, and performance boosters which can be picked up in-game.<\/p>\n

When the lack of regenerating health and frantic, fast-paced action becomes too much and you die, you will respawn with a melee weapon and a pistol. Combined with the lack of levelling, and the game ensures “all players are equal”.<\/p>\n

You will be able to customise your character, and an XP system is in place, but the latter will only be used for matchmaking purposes. Another positive for the game\u00a0– and something I miss in most modern shooters – is the inclusion of an offline bot mode.<\/p>\n

Toxikk will have two kinds of maps: Classic Maps and Massive Maps. Classic Maps will feature fast-paced gameplay and are described as medium-sized environments for up to eight players. Massive Maps, on the other hand, will require more strategic gameplay on larger-sized locales for up to 16 players.<\/p>\n

Players can also apply for a free software development kit which will allow them to build their own maps, characters, and skins for the game.<\/p>\n

And just to let the gamers out there know how Reakktor roll, they had this to say:<\/p>\n

“We believe that shooters are meant to be played with mouse and keyboard. That’s why Toxikk is exclusively designed for PC. At this point, we do not intend to port the game to any other platform.”<\/p>\n

There is one downer though: No LAN support. Not yet anyway.<\/p>\n

According to the guys at Reakktor, there are plans to implement it, but it will only be added to the to-do list after the game launches.<\/p>\n

“Supporting LAN-play is not yet on our list, but I know that some team members consider it a must-have. Right now, the main focus is to get solid online play together. But there’s a good chance we’ll work on LAN support once the base game is complete.”<\/p>\n

Toxikk is due to launch on Steam Early Access later this year, and can be pre-ordered from the Toxikk website for $15<\/a>.<\/p>\n
