Global media group, BuzzCity, has posted a release<\/a> detailing local mobile game downloads in June. <\/p>\n

The figures are pretty impressive. In May 2010, they reported 132,688 games downloaded to mobile phones in SA. This figure shot up to 656,641 downloads in June. <\/p>\n

Interestingly, a strong correlation has been drawn between large global sporting events, and the amount of games that are downloaded around the world. The Soccer World Cup is thought to be responsible for the 25% increase in global games download over June. Similar trends have been noticed surrounding the Indian Premier League and World Twenty 20 cricket tournaments.<\/p>\n

40 percent of local downloads in June  were of sports games, with no further indication of how many were soccer related. Movies & TV comprised 20 percent of the downloads, with arcade games making up 10 percent. <\/p>\n

The release does not provide the top games in SA, but these are the ten biggest globally:<\/p>\n

1. <\/span>Fatal First – 531,016<\/p>\n

2. <\/span>4×4 Extreme Rally – 365,145<\/p>\n

3. <\/span>Ben 10: Battle for the Omnitrix – 304,431<\/p>\n

4. <\/span>2D Moto Racing Evolved – 279,161<\/p>\n

5. <\/span>Crash Arena 3D – 278,985<\/p>\n

6. <\/span>The Great War of Troy – 273,858<\/p>\n

7. <\/span>Dragon and Dracula – 209,879<\/p>\n

8. <\/span>Doom II RPG – 209,722<\/p>\n

9. <\/span>Footballz 2009 – 173,711<\/p>\n

10. <\/span>Speed Moto – 131,637<\/p>\n

32 percent of these games were downloaded using Nokia phones, while 13 percent were to Samsung, and 10 percent to Sony Ericsson. <\/p>\n
