Not everyone can afford an AMD Radeon\u00a0R9 295X2<\/a>\u00a0or an Nvidia GTX Titan Z<\/a> – and AMD appreciates this.<\/p>\n

Launched on 2 September 2014, the slightly more affordable AMD\u00a0Radeon R9 285 will cater to gamers who need to balance performance and price.<\/p>\n

AMD says the card is “loaded with the latest from Graphics Core Next architecture, including mixed screen resolution and orientation for AMD Eyefinity technology, and support for DirectX12 and AMD\u2019s groundbreaking Mantle API”.<\/p>\n

The company also guarantees<\/a> the\u00a0R9 285 will be faster than Nvidia’s GTX 760.<\/p>\n

Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry<\/a>\u00a0got its hands on the card on launch date and put it through it through its paces.<\/p>\n

The HD – 1920 x 1080 – and QHD – 2560×1440 – tests on the group’s gaming rig showed that AMD’s claims were justified. The\u00a0R9 285 performed better than the\u00a0\u00a0Nvidia GTX 760 in Battlefield 4, Tomb Raider, and BioShock Infinite.<\/p>\n

In BioShock, set to QHD, the AMD card was a full 14 frames per second faster than the GTX 760.<\/p>\n

The final verdict was that AMD has taken a clear performance lead in the sector of the market the\u00a0R9 285 falls into.<\/p>\n

A quick look online showed that Evetech seemed to be the only local supplier with prices for the card, which can be pre-ordered for R3,999<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n
