South Africa is plummeting down the global international Internet bandwidth rankings.\u00a0This is according to the World Economic Forum (WEF) Global Competitiveness Report 2014-2015.<\/p>\n

The Global Competitiveness Report 2014 – 2015 assesses the competitiveness landscape of 144 economies, providing insight into the drivers of their productivity and prosperity.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Report series remains the most comprehensive assessment of national competitiveness worldwide,\u201d the WEF said.<\/p>\n

According to the report, South Africa performed above average on the availability of the latest technologies (39 out of 144 countries), firm-level technology absorption (29), and FDI and technology transfer (50).<\/p>\n

The country did not fare well in fixed broadband Internet subscriptions (89) and mobile broadband subscriptions (74).<\/p>\n

International Internet bandwidth<\/h3>\n

One section on the report focuses on the international Internet bandwidth capacity (kb\/s) per Internet user in a country.<\/p>\n

This measure is based on the sum of capacity of all Internet exchanges offering international bandwidth, measured in kilobits per second (kb\/s).<\/p>\n

According to the report, South Africa dropped from 63 (out of 144 countries) in 2012 to 126 in 2014 using this measure.<\/p>\n

South Africa is now ranked below countries like Uganda, Zambia, Ghana, and Mali when looking at the international Internet bandwidth rankings.<\/p>\n

Individuals using the Internet<\/h3>\n

The WEF\u2019s Global Competitiveness Report had some good news regarding South Africa\u2019s Internet market as well.<\/p>\n

The number of individuals in South Africa using the Internet has improved significantly over the last three years.<\/p>\n
