Oh, it’s about time some lurid, trashy tabloid were forced to take responsibility for their lurid trashiness. Of course, the tabloids have been out in lurid, trashy force over the recent Raoul Moat <\/a>murders and manhunt in the UK, but the Daily Star went right over the top with this absurd report <\/a>(caught by some enterprising chap over at RockPaperShotgun), claiming Rockstar was developing a Grand Theft Auto title based on the events. Their only evidence a patently fake box shot probably ‘shopped by some 4Channer, no less. <\/p>\n

But nobody messes with Rockstar, their heaps of cash, and their legion of genetically enhanced superlawyers. Obviously under some formidable litigating duress, the tabloid has been forced to run the most hilarious, humiliating retraction<\/a> ever, including this shameful acknowledgement of their own lack of all journalistic integrity:<\/p>\n

“We made no attempt to check the accuracy of the story before publication and did not contact Rockstar Games prior to publishing the story. We also did not question why a best selling and critically acclaimed fictional games series would choose to base one of their most popular games on this horrifying real crime event.”<\/p>\n

Oh, OUCH. The author of this egregious story, one evidently sociopathic twit Jerry Lawton, was somewhat less remorseful, however, posting on his Facebook page that he’s “baffled by the fury of adult gamers. These are grown (?!?) men who sit around all day playing computer games with one another who’ve today chosen to enter the real world just long enough to complain about my story slamming a Raoul Moat version of Grand Theft Auto! You would think I’d denied the Holocaust!!! Think I’ll challenge them to a virtual reality duel….stab….I win!!!”.<\/p>\n

So apparently no progress on that whole “accuracy” thing just yet. <\/p>\n
