Sony has revealed via its latest financial results that it has now sold a total of 38.1 million PS3 consoles worldwide. This comes after Sony managed to sell 2.4 million consoles between April and June 2010. In the same period last year, Sony managed just 1.1 million PS3s sold. This means that Sony has enjoyed a 118 percent increase in PS3s sold year on year, thanks to the release of the PS3 Slim in late 2009 at its new low price. <\/p>\n
In comparison, Microsoft recently revealed that it has sold 41.7 million Xbox 360s to date. Xbox 360 sales tapered off slightly in Microsoft’s recent financial year, dropping from 11.2 million units sold in the previous year, to 10.3 million.<\/p>\n
PSP sales were not as promising for Sony, and dropped from 1.3 to 1.2 million units sold in the recent financial quarter. The PS2 continues to sell almost a decade after its launch, and managed 1.6 million units sold over the quarter. <\/p>\n
Microsoft is expected to enjoy reinvigorated console sales following the launch of the new Xbox 360 S, as well as their soon to be launched motion control device; Kinect. <\/p>\n
The Xbox 360 has been available for close to a year longer than the PS3 has. With this year advantage, their lifetime sales are only 3.6 million units ahead of the PS3. Relative to its life span, the PS3 is actually ahead of the Xbox 360 now, and may even overtake the Xbox 360 if Microsoft is not careful. <\/p>\n
