The install base of the PlayStation 4 has just gone over 40,000, and there are over 300,000 PlayStation 3 consoles in South Africa.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s the word from Mario Dos Santos, CEO of Ster-Kinekor Entertainment.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a little difficult to gauge [the PS3 install base] because we don\u2019t know how many guys have migrated to the next-gen,\u201d Dos Santos said.<\/p>\n
The uptake of the PS4 compared to the PS3 in terms of life cycle stage is 40% higher, Dos Santos said, with Ster-Kinekor expecting to sell another 70,000 to 100,000 PlayStation 4 consoles in the next year.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn truth at launch it was challenging because we didn\u2019t have supply, so we\u2019ll probably get a fair measure once we\u2019ve been through this festive [season],\u201d Dos Santos said.<\/p>\n
Once the new figures are in, he said they expect sales of the PS4 to be 50% up on the PS3 on a like-for-like life cycle basis.<\/p>\n
Asked whether the faster uptake of the PS4 was indicative of an increase in the size of South Africa\u2019s gaming market, Dos Santos said that he doesn\u2019t believe so.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn terms of the consumer base itself, I\u2019m not sure that that\u2019s growing [at a fast rate],\u201d Dos Santos said.<\/p>\n
He added that he thinks the increase in uptake of the PS4 compared to the PS3 was purely a function of the console.<\/p>\n
