{"id":70392,"date":"2014-11-17T23:23:40","date_gmt":"2014-11-17T21:23:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/?p=70392"},"modified":"2014-11-17T23:25:41","modified_gmt":"2014-11-17T21:25:41","slug":"biggest-let-downs-of-the-last-generation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/features\/70392-biggest-let-downs-of-the-last-generation","title":{"rendered":"Biggest let downs of the &#8220;last generation&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just like the roads in South Africa, the last-gen consoles were bumpy, expensive, and sometimes had potholes (of disappointment) in them &#8211; unless you lived in a nice neighborhood or major city, then they were sometimes smooth and got you where you needed to go.<\/p>\n<p>The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 had some good days, but they also had some terrible ones &#8211; we take a look at the latter.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Microsoft Xbox 360<\/h3>\n<h4>Red Ring of Death<\/h4>\n<p>The Red Ring of Death &#8211; known as the RRoD &#8211; was arguably the biggest dent in Xbox 360&#8217;s reputation during its lifespan.<\/p>\n<p>The first generation of 360s suffered something terrible from this problem, with many users reporting that their consoles simply gave up on life during a game. It was not until a few years later that Microsoft started producing more robust consoles, but by then the damage was done.<\/p>\n<p>The solution to the RRoD &#8211; throw your console off a bridge.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oiXwA9T26W4?rel=0\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4>Kinect<\/h4>\n<p>The &#8220;you are the controller&#8221; slogan was the hottest marketing line back when Microsoft revealed the first Kinect Model in 2010. Unfortunately the company may have oversold the product, with a buggy body recognition engine and shoddy games defining the motion sensor.<\/p>\n<p>Gamers eventually reached a stage where their Kinects become dust-collecting ornaments due to the aforementioned issues and poor software support.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone else remember shouting voice commands at Mass Effect 3?<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/p2qlHoxPioM?rel=0\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4>Multiple Discs<\/h4>\n<p>The Xbox 360 was not the \u201cgreenest\u201d console on the market, especially when it came to big games like Final Fantasy XIII. PS Home was supposed to be the hub where gamers from all over the world could come and chill, while tailoring the digital world to suit their needs and likes.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of everything Sony promised, gamers got an overpriced living space with buggy environments, zero cross-game initiatives, and a drinks bill which would rival a night out with Charlie Sheen.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AFziZ-CDamk?rel=0\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4>Goodbye PS2 Games<\/h4>\n<p>One of the best features of the PS3 was the ability to play your old PS2 games &#8211; backwards compatibility for the win. This feature did not last long, however, when Sony decided to redesign the PS3 and look where it could cut costs.<\/p>\n<p>One of the &#8220;cost-cutting&#8221; measures was the removal of the ability to play PS2 games from the original disc &#8211; meaning gamers had to purchase the PS2 game from the PlayStation Store or wait for it to receive the HD Remaster treatment.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_70458\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/PlayStation-2-Games.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70458\" class=\"size-large wp-image-70458\" src=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/PlayStation-2-Games-600x350.jpg\" alt=\"PlayStation 2 Games\" width=\"600\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/PlayStation-2-Games-600x350.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/PlayStation-2-Games.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-70458\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PlayStation 2 Games<\/p><\/div>\n<h4>Yellow Light of Death<\/h4>\n<p>Just like the Xbox 360, the PS3 also had its dramatic light of doom.<\/p>\n<p>The Yellow Light of Death meant your PS3 would not boot during the system check, and the console even made a beeping sound just to drive the point home.<\/p>\n<p>Sony did allow some owners of faulty PS3s to send their consoles in and have them replaced with a refurbished unit, which would eventually break down and succumb to the Yellow Light of Death, too.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OmLlvRtpHrA?rel=0\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4>PlayStation Network Hack<\/h4>\n<p>Lasting 24 days, the PlayStation Network hack downtime was one the biggest cyber attacks in gaming history.
