This is Sparta!”

Unfortunately this is not how a typical board meeting goes down, and a DLC decision of this nature would most likely be met with a more positive and less “kick you to your death” response.

I am a capitalist, and I understand the need and benefits of companies making lots and lots of money. That being said, game publishers and developers are just becoming plain rude these days when it comes to DLC and expansions for games.

Two recent, high profile examples are Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and Destiny.

In Call of Duty’s case the Season Pass was advertised and detailed before the title had even launched. Currently going for $50 on Steam, the pass gives you access to DLC for the game – such as multiplayer maps and a zombie mode which the franchise is famous for.

In the case of Destiny an Expansion Pass – selling for R399 for the PS4 on the local PSN store – for the title’s two expansions was named and put on sale before I had even reached level two with my Titan. The first expansion is due out in early December and includes new multiplayer maps, weapons, and missions.

As a Destiny player, I can understand the need to prolong the longevity of the game with DLC, but don’t charge me almost as much as the original game for it. Build it into your initial development costs or bundle it with the original game for a slight premium.

Oh, a Destiny Digital Guardian edition exists which includes the expansions when they release? Yes, and it costs almost double that of the standard version of the game.

What developers and publishers must bear in mind is that gamers are quite an educated bunch. We know that the cost to produce additional maps, missions, and weapons is a lot less than building the original game.

The game’s framework is there; your coders and designers are more efficient, and therefore more productive, than they were when they initially worked on the game; and the fixed costs of studio equipment and software are most likely paid off.

Basically it is like a fit guy running an extra km or two a week during his workout – he may not be super keen, but it is not that taxing. He already has his running shoes on, his legs are all warmed up, and his Virgin Active memberships is paid off.

In short, economies of scale dictates DLC should be cheaper.

Why the sudden outpouring of anger you ask? Well, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is coming out in February 2015 and the game’s developer – CD Projekt Red – has already outlined the title’s planned DLC.

There will be 16 pieces of DLC content, which will cost gamers a grand total of zero cents.

No small print, no “T&Cs”, all the DLC will be free if you buy a copy of the game.

In a recently published open letter CD Projekt co-founder Marcin Iwiński told people exactly what he thought about the current state of games and DLC.

“We love games. We love collecting them, playing them, and everything connected to that experience. Every time we reach out for a new release, we expect to be taken care of. We expect support if we encounter any problems, we love updates constantly improving the experience, and we feel really special when we receive free content that gives us more than we initially paid for. It doesn’t have to be huge, it can be an awesome skin for a character or an extra sword, or armour,” he said.

“Unfortunately this treatment is quite rare these days. As gamers, we nowadays have to hold on tight to our wallets, as [un]surprisingly right after release, lots of tiny pieces of tempting content materialise with a steep price tag attached. Haven’t we just paid a lot of cash for a brand new game?”

Marcin, you couldn’t be more right – take it home buddy.

“Cutting to the chase, everyone who buys Wild Hunt will receive 16 specially prepared DLCs absolutely for free, regardless of platform. You don’t have to pre-order, you don’t have to buy any special edition to get them – if you own a copy of Wild Hunt, they’re yours. This is our way of saying thank you for buying our game.”

I was planning on buying The Witcher 3 anyway, and the recent DLC announcement has just strengthened my resolve to give my money to CD Projekt Red. Well played team, well played.

Let’s hope your example is followed.

What do you think about DLC and its cost?
