Intel recently announced the addition of the M.2 form factor to its S3500 lineup – which is not what we are interested in. What we want to talk about is the addition of higher capacity 2.5-inch SSDs to the Intel range, specifically the new 1.2TB and 1.6TB drives.<\/p>\n

According to people who know a lot more about hard drives than I do, the increased size does not affect the Flash Translation Layer – which is important, I think.<\/p>\n

The 1.2TB and 1.6TB models provide higher random write speeds, due to the fact they have additional NAND-based flash memory.<\/p>\n

According to Anandtech, Intel is in talks to try and integrate the new SSDs into servers, but for now the drives will be used primarily in devices like ATMs, slot machines, and cash registers.<\/p>\n
