{"id":71431,"date":"2015-01-18T14:00:56","date_gmt":"2015-01-18T12:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/?p=71431"},"modified":"2015-01-15T15:32:12","modified_gmt":"2015-01-15T13:32:12","slug":"sa-township-school-has-faster-broadband-than-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/broadband\/71431-sa-township-school-has-faster-broadband-than-you","title":{"rendered":"SA township school has faster broadband than you"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Gauteng MEC for education Panyaza Lesufi has announced the launch of the province\u2019s paperless classroom project, with promises of \u201cworld-class broadband\u201d for the schools involved.<\/p>\n<p>Lesufi was speaking during\u00a0an event\u00a0held on Tuesday, 13 January 2015, at Boitumelong Secondary School in Tembisa, where\u00a0a\u00a0Wi-Fi network had been deployed in support of the project.<\/p>\n<p>To get an idea of what the promised \u201cworld-class\u201d broadband connection would be like, we conducted a few speed tests from both a mobile device and notebook computer.<\/p>\n<p>The smartphone Speedtest.net result was astonishing, suggesting that Boitumelong Secondary has access to a symmetrical 90 Megabit per second (Mbps) fibre connection, running on the Seacom-AS network.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_116780\" style=\"width: 325px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Boitumelong-Secondary-School-local-Wi-Fi-speed-test-from-smartphone.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-116780\" class=\"size-full wp-image-116780\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Boitumelong-Secondary-School-local-Wi-Fi-speed-test-from-smartphone.jpg\" alt=\"Boitumelong Secondary School local Wi-Fi speed test from smartphone\" width=\"315\" height=\"560\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-116780\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Boitumelong Secondary School local Wi-Fi speed test from smartphone<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Further testing suggested that staff and students at the school may not have access to this full bandwidth all the time.<\/p>\n<p>Local and international speed tests conducted later from a different device showed that download speeds capped at exactly 15Mbps, while upload speeds came back at exactly 0.5Mbps.<\/p>\n<p>The screenshot below is an example of the speeds achieved when connecting to the school\u2019s Wi-Fi from a different device.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Boitumelong-Secondary-School-Wi-Fi-speedtest-throttled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-116778\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Boitumelong-Secondary-School-Wi-Fi-speedtest-throttled.jpg\" alt=\"Boitumelong Secondary School Wi-Fi speedtest -
