Modern Warfare 2 took a lot of flak from the PC gaming community, mostly because there was no dedicated server support, but also because there were no mod tools released for the title, unlike the original Modern Warfare and World at War.<\/p>\n

Treyarch has confirmed that dedicated servers<\/a> would be a feature of Black Ops, placating many gamers still bitter about the Modern Warfare 2 fiasco. <\/p>\n

PC gamers have yet another reason to be lured back to the franchise, as Treyarch has confirmed via their official forums<\/a> that there will be a mod tool package for the game, although it will only be available sometime post-release.<\/p>\n

“We plan to open the game up for modding sometime post-launch,” explained a post by ‘pcdev,’ the forum name used by Treyarch’s PC platform development team. “We do not know yet to what extent you will be able to mod the game.”<\/p>\n

“There are some purely technical issues related to engine and internal tool enhancements that do not easily fit the modtools paradigm. We have looked at it close enough to see that it is non-trivial and we will have to pick it up again post-launch. Right now we are completely focused on finishing the game. And, dev console: confirmed,” concluded pcdev.<\/p>\n

The response on the forums has been overwhelmingly positive at this news, and for good reason. The combination of dedicated servers, mod tools, and developer console access means that the PC gaming community will have a whole host of gameplay options opened up to them. It also means that the game will have some extended multiplayer life in it as well – if players get bored with the standard gameplay modes, they can fire up some mods.<\/p>\n

The question still remains as to the extent to which modders will be able to fiddle with the game’s core files, but those are just finer details. <\/p>\n

With the awesome Zombie Mode from World at War making a return, and with the tantalising multiplayer footage<\/a> in mind, Black Ops is shaping up to be an impressive multiplayer game offering.<\/p>\n

Treyarch has promised a full multiplayer reveal on 1 September 2010 – stay tuned to MyGaming as we’ll bring you the update as it happens.<\/p>\n
