I\u2019m\u2019ma let you finish, but before you rush to tell me how misleading, hyperbolic, and downright trollish the headline is, hear me out.<\/p>\n<p>Back in 2013 a number of online dictionaries including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oxforddictionaries.com\/definition\/english\/literally?q=literally\" target=\"_blank\">Oxford<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/dictionary\/british\/literally?q=literally\" target=\"_blank\">Cambridge<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/literally\" target=\"_blank\">Merriam-Webster<\/a> made the informal use of the word \u201cliterally\u201d official.<\/p>\n<p><em>Literally<\/em> may be used \u201cfor emphasis\u201d, the dictionaries now say.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, we can literally use <em>literally<\/em> to indicate that something is not \u2014 in fact \u2014 literal.<\/p>\n<p>This leaves us with precious few options for a word that unambiguously means \u201ctake the literal meaning\u201d, unless we break out such clunkers as <em>connotation<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was &#8216;connotatively&#8217; going to kill me\u201d just doesn&#8217;t have the same ring to it, does it?<\/p>\n<p>Which brings me to \u201cactually\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>I was going to say that I\u2019m just preempting the inevitable change to the definition of the word to include its use as short-hand for \u201cnot actually, but in my differing opinion\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, it would seem I&#8217;ve already been beaten there.<\/p>\n<p>Quoth <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oxforddictionaries.com\/definition\/english\/actually\" target=\"_blank\">Oxford Dictionaries<\/a> online:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Used when expressing a contradictory or unexpected opinion or correcting someone.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Which now that I think about it, actually makes sense. Actually, using <em>actually<\/em> in this way is nothing new, just like <em>literally<\/em>\u2019s alternative meaning isn\u2019t actually new either.<\/p>\n<p>Now that we&#8217;ve literally got that out of the way, let\u2019s actually start the list, shall we?<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Pre-order hell<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_73011\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Watch-Dogs-pre-order-matrix-on-Wikipedia-prior-to-launch.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-73011\" class=\"wp-image-73011\" src=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Watch-Dogs-pre-order-matrix-on-Wikipedia-prior-to-launch.jpg\" alt=\"Watch Dogs pre-order matrix on Wikipedia prior to launch\" width=\"600\" height=\"309\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Watch-Dogs-pre-order-matrix-on-Wikipedia-prior-to-launch.jpg 1199w, https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Watch-Dogs-pre-order-matrix-on-Wikipedia-prior-to-launch-600x309.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-73011\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">If your game&#8217;s Wikipedia page has a table like this in it before launch, something has gone terribly, terribly wrong<\/p><\/div>\n<p>There once was a time, not that long ago, when you only had to decide between getting the normal or collector&#8217;s edition of a game.<\/p>\n<p>Getting a collector&#8217;s edition also didn\u2019t mean you get to unlock additional game content. You\u2019d get a map, a statuette, a Steelbook case, a T-shirt, a poster, and\/or other assorted swag.<\/p>\n<p>The game was the game, and when you bought it you got the whole thing.<\/p>\n<p>This doesn&#8217;t mean that all day\u20131 downloadable content and pre-order incentives are a bad thing, but the nonsense that is being peddled as \u201cgreater customer choice\u201d nowadays is just madness.<\/p>\n<p>We have got to a stage where it has become necessary to build spreadsheets to figure out which version of a game to buy. Where publishers try to dangle high-budget content in front of us like some sort of pre-order carrot.<\/p>\n<p>Then on the other end of the spectrum there are the pre-order pants.<\/p>\n<p>Quite the language metaphor for the current state of video game pre-orders. Because it is exactly that. Pants.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Death by a thousand microtransactions<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_73021\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Pay-Once-and-Play-iTunes-app-store-collection-banner.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-73021\" class=\"size-full wp-image-73021\" src=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Pay-Once-and-Play-iTunes-app-store-collection-banner.jpg\" alt=\"Pay Once and Play iTunes app store collection banner\" width=\"600\" height=\"239\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-73021\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pay Once and Play banner on iTunes<\/p><\/div>\n<p>When Bethesda launched horse armour DLC for Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion at the low, low price of $2.50 in April 2006, we chuckled and poked a bit of fun at what seemed like a misstep that the industry would learn from.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re not laughing anymore.<\/p>\n<p>Although not all microtransactions are bad, and not all games that include wait times for activity progress are bad, there are a few \u201cfree-to-play\u201d \/ \u201cfreemium\u201d \/ \u201cfree-to-start\u201d games out there that take taking the piss to the next level.<\/p>\n<p>Some have even forged an unholy union with the worst aspects of microtransactions and waiting games, resulting in monstrosities that would happily <a title=\"How freemium games are tearing you a new one\" href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/features\/72107-how-freemium-games-are-tearing-you-a-new-one.html\"><strong>devour anything between $250 and $12,500<\/strong><\/a> from your wallet, or make you wait years to unlock all the content or features available.<\/p>\n<p>You know it\u2019s gone too far when an app store operator like Apple decides to launch a \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/insertcoin\/2015\/02\/13\/apple-promotes-strange-new-game-type-in-ios-app-store-pay-once-and-play-2\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Pay Once and Play<\/strong><\/a>\u201d sub-category.<\/p>\n<p>My recommendation? When you feel like getting feedback from a game for watching a progress bar fill up, \u201cplay\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/progressquest.com\" target=\"_blank\">ProgressQuest<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/godvillegame.com\" target=\"_blank\">Godville<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Milking a franchise until only pus comes out<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_29225\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Guitar-Hero-Mashup.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29225\" class=\"wp-image-29225\" src=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Guitar-Hero-Mashup.jpg\" alt=\"Guitar Hero Mashup\" width=\"600\" height=\"352\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Guitar-Hero-Mashup.jpg 984w, https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Guitar-Hero-Mashup-300x176.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Guitar-Hero-Mashup-250x146.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-29225\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Guitar Hero<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A toast for the fallen! To Guitar Hero! To Rockband! May your legacy long be remembered.<\/p>\n<p>They stand as a dire warning against releasing sequels for the sake of it, yet publishers such as Activision (which handled Guitar Hero back in the day), EA (Rockband), and Ubisoft continue to push annual releases.<\/p>\n<p>Franchises such as Assassin\u2019s Creed, Call of Duty, and a variety of sports games are all on annual release cycles, with the latest batch leaving gamers complaining about bugs and sometimes a lack of any improvements warranting a sequel.<\/p>\n<p>How long will consumers continue to stomach the declining relative quality of annualised game franchises? Maybe this time it\u2019ll be different. Maybe this time it\u2019ll be forever. Probably not, though.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Flooding the market with rubbish<\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Y-9YbJEpy_Y\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Though Steam is often blamed for the current deluge of shockingly poor games that people are actually charging money for, Valve is stuck between Scylla and Charybdis.<\/p>\n<p>The terrible games that sometimes make their way onto Steam\u2019s Early Access system are not the only problem, however.<\/p>\n<p>This point can be used as a summary for everything discussed above:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Asking gamers to make complex purchasing decisions before the game is even out.<\/li>\n<li>Overpriced DLC and asking money for content that should have been in the game in the first place.<\/li>\n<li>Exploitative microtransactions.<\/li>\n<li>Forced annual releases.<\/li>\n<li>Unplayable tripe on Early Access.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This is obviously not an exhaustive list, but hopefully I\u2019ve covered the most important ones.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Things that aren&#8217;t killing gaming<\/h3>\n<p>We can\u2019t end off an article like this without being a little (more) controversial, and frankly I don\u2019t want to just list negative things.<\/p>\n<p>How about a list of things that <strong>aren\u2019t<\/strong> actually literally killing gaming?<\/p>\n<h4>The industry<\/h4>\n<p>Though my little tirade above might give the impression that I believe the industry is killing gaming, it\u2019s actually somewhat more complex than that.<\/p>\n<p>There are plenty of studios and quite a few publishers out there doing really interesting things on budgets that don\u2019t exceed a small country\u2019s GDP.<\/p>\n<p>More than that, they actually seem to treat their customers with respect.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s hoping we gamerkin collectively throw our money behind them in 2015, rather than falling for the tricks of other parts of the industry.<\/p>\n<h4>Gamers<\/h4>\n<div id=\"attachment_32615\" style=\"width: 635px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Gamercat.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32615\" class=\"size-full wp-image-32615\" src=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Gamercat.jpg\" alt=\"Gamercat\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Gamercat.jpg 625w, https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Gamercat-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Gamercat-80x45.jpg 80w, https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Gamercat-100x56.jpg 100w, https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Gamercat-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Gamercat-170x96.jpg 170w, https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Gamercat-297x167.jpg 297w, https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Gamercat-530x298.jpg 530w, https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Gamercat-250x140.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-32615\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The One True Gamer<\/p><\/div>\n<p>There have been some knee-jerk reactions, and generalisations thrown around <a href=\"http:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gaming\/2014\/08\/the-death-of-the-gamers-and-the-women-who-killed-them\/\" target=\"_blank\">in the past year<\/a> which \u2014 while perhaps being well-meaning \u2014 were unhelpful.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cgamer\u201d sub-culture and identity is not dead, though it may be overdue for a name change.<\/p>\n<p>Gamers are also not killing gaming.<\/p>\n<p>Even the most hateful, toxic people that count themselves among our number aren\u2019t killing our hobby.
