{"id":73131,"date":"2015-03-07T23:55:41","date_gmt":"2015-03-07T21:55:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/?p=73131"},"modified":"2015-03-06T18:44:58","modified_gmt":"2015-03-06T16:44:58","slug":"we-are-getting-screwed-over-broadband-prices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/broadband\/73131-we-are-getting-screwed-over-broadband-prices","title":{"rendered":"We are getting screwed over broadband prices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ookla\u2019s Household Value Index and Household Promise Index statistics\u00a0from February 2015 show that South Africans pay a lot more than other countries for a broadband connection.<\/p>\n<p>Despite improvements in broadband speeds and decreasing costs, the relative value South African broadband users get compared to the rest of the world remains low.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of\u00a0cost per Megabit per second (Mbps) \u2014 which measures how much you pay for the broadband speed you get \u2014\u00a0South Africa was ranked 62nd out 62 countries, with a median monthly cost of $19.88 (R230) per Mbps.<\/p>\n<p>The price has improved since September 2014, when the local\u00a0median monthly cost was $23.08 per Mbps.<\/p>\n<p>The global median cost per Mbps was $5.36.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_119538\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Net-Index-South-Africa.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-119538\" class=\"wp-image-119538\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Net-Index-South-Africa.jpg\" alt=\"Net Index South Africa\" width=\"600\" height=\"285\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-119538\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Net Index South Africa<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The top-ranked country on the list was Bulgaria, with its users paying $0.44 (R5) per month per Mbps.<\/p>\n<p>The top 10 cheapest countries, as ranked using the average cost measure, are listed below.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_119536\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Net-Index-Top-10.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-119536\" class=\"wp-image-119536\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Net-Index-Top-10.jpg\" alt=\"Net Index Top 10\" width=\"600\" height=\"819\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-119536\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Net Index Top 10<\/p><\/div>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Relative cost to GDP<\/h3>\n<p>South Africa improved slightly when it came to the relative cost of broadband,\u00a0as measured by dividing the monthly\u00a0subscription cost\u00a0by the Gross Domestic Product per Capita.<\/p>\n<p>Ranked 57 out of 62 countries, with the cost of broadband representing\u00a011.185% of GPD per capita, SA beat Egypt, the Philippines, Vietnam, Pakistan, and India.<\/p>\n<p>This is still significantly higher than the government\u2019s policy of giving every South African broadband access for 2.5% or less of the country\u2019s average monthly income, though.<\/p>\n<p>Luxemborg came in first, with\u00a0the cost of broadband representing\u00a00.606%\u00a0of GPD per capita.<\/p>\n<p>When looking at the relative cost per Mbps &#8211; the\u00a0median cost per Mbps\u00a0divided by the Gross Domestic Product per Capita &#8211; SA came 58th out of 62.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Promised Speed vs Actual Speed<\/h3>\n<p>South Africa also doesn\u2019t rank well on Ookla\u2019s global Household Promise Index.<\/p>\n<p>Also based on its surveys and tests conducted through Ookla&#8217;s Speedtest.net, the Household Promise Index uses the median ratio of actual download speed to the download speed subscribed to, or \u201cpromised speed\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Here SA came in at 56th out of 64 tested countries, with a median of 73.05% promised speed delivered.
