These are the games that make children cry, that have us suffering in frustration and anguish, that make us want to smash our controllers in two, and that are just downright impossible. These games are more than just hard. This is the list of the games I think will make you sweat and swear most.

Super Meat Boy

Super Meat Boy has some extremely fast platforming mechanics that will irritate you profusely. Perfectly timed jumps, wall runs, avoiding meat saws and collecting plasters at the same time will not only test your muscle memory and reflexes, but your mettle and patience. You will die a few hundred times before you get to the end of the level, and then you will die again. It’s fun though.

Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin

Just when you thought that Dark Souls II was hard enough, Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin slaps you in the face, screaming, “Think again!” The “ultimate edition” of Dark Souls II has added in a few new mechanics that will sucker punch you the moment you thought you were okay.

Harder enemies have been added and re-positioned to be more annoying; weapons break within fewer hits; and the enemy count for most areas has almost doubled. Scholar of the First Sin is much harder than anything From Software have ever developed, and we love them for that.

Super Ghouls ‘n Goblins

Back in the day, there was a franchise called Ghosts ‘n Goblins; it was one of the hardest games to ever see the light of day. And just when you thought it couldn’t possibly get any harder, they released a sequel: Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts was brutal in every way possible. Three hits was all it took to end your run, and that is only if you had the right armour on. When you were hit, and should you lack any remaining lives, you were returned to the main menu with the option to, guess what, start again from the beginning of the game.

If you ever managed to complete the game for the first time, you finally reach the princess and she makes you do it all over again for the second time. Remember, if you die you will have to do it all over again… again.

Megaman 9

In 2008, Capcom thought to revive the Megaman series by releasing a classic Megaman title that matched the 8-bit games we all loved. Along with the classic soundtrack, cool bosses and one-of-a-kind visuals, they also made it as hard as it could possibly be.

Precise pixel perfect ledges, enemies that were determined to hit you mid-air, and let us not forget those darn spikes that kill you instantly; they were all back and worse than ever. It was a true Megaman title and lived up to our favourite Rocketman and Megaman childhood memories as a result. There were nightmares too.

Battletoads

Before even attempting Battletoads, you had to have another player help you out. The game was next to impossible to play alone. The obstacles and enemies were just too much to handle alone. Even after you plugged in a second controller, it was a risk knowing that your friend could beat the living daylights out of you too thanks to the ability to hit your co-op partner. When one of you died, you both returned to the beginning of the level.

The game featured no passwords, no save feature and three lives per player. Just get used to that main menu screen; you will spend quite some time there.

There you have the hardest games I have ever played. What are your top five? What are the games that brought you to tears but felt most rewarding come their completion. Or, possibly, that you have yet to complete to this day?
