Rumour has it that the OzModChippers<\/a> are planning an update to their PS3 jailbreak USB solution<\/a>. The original USB dongle basically tricks a PS3 into thinking that it is a dev unit, and therefore allows unsigned code to be run on, and copied to, the device.<\/p>\n

This solution allows gamers to make backups of their precious games, allow homebrew developers to toy with creating software that runs on the PS3, and most unfortunately for people of high moral fibre, it allows pirates to do what they do best. All for the hefty price tag of AUS$170 (±R1100).<\/p>\n

Sony was quick to point out that any modded PS3’s would be detected on the PSN and banned<\/a>. The Modchip currently works on the 3.41 PS3 firmware. Sony has just released PS3 firmware version 3.42<\/a>, with many users reporting their PS3 USB dongle hacks being rendered obsolete. A game of cat and mouse is bound to ensue as the modders challenge themselves to keep up with Sony – perhaps the PS3 Modchip version 1.1 already has this workaround in mind, as claims to support any firmware version..<\/p>\n

Piracy issues aside, the PS3 Modchip is a technological breakthrough, and a pretty neat and tidy one at that, considering how PS2 mod chips had to be soldered onto the mainboard of the device.<\/p>\n

Now the real news is that a rumoured version 1.1 update to the PS3 Modchip will be enabling playing and copying of PS2 and PSX games. I say ‘rumoured’ because the source of this information is a Google translated German website post<\/a>, which itself points to sources on Spanish and French mod community sites. No official announcement has come from OzModChip yet.<\/p>\n

The list of version claimed 1.1 PS3 Modchip updates:<\/p>\n

– Supports the playback and copying PSX and PS2 games (no matter which PS3 version).
– Supports any firmware.
– Supports NTFS Hard Discs.
– Supports copying of Blu-Ray Discs.
– Supports playback of the *.mkv video format.
– Automatic updating of the stick via PC.
– Allows play online without risk of excommunication.<\/p>\n

Being able to play PS2 and PSX games on a PlayStation 3 is supposedly a function that was stripped from the console early in its lifecycle, with only a few of the original console versions still capable. This playback capability raises a couple of questions:<\/p>\n

Did Sony merely disable the PS2 hardware based emulation rather than removing it from the device entirely, and if so, why? The cynical among us would simply say that Sony disabled the emulation option because they wanted to ensure sales of PS2 consoles remained strong (which they did), and give PS3 owners a reason to purchase HD remakes of classic PS2 titles.<\/p>\n

Is the PS3 Modchip emulation some kind of software based solution, and is it based on Sony’s partial software based emulation found on early PS3 models? It would be an impressive feat for the OzModChippers to have created their own software based emulation that correctly utilises the PS3 hardware. We’ll have to wait until the new Modchip is out in the gaming wilds to see if it can pull it off.<\/p>\n
