MyGaming thought it was high time to do another Linux compatible gaming round-up. A lot of these games support multiple platforms, and not just Linux, because Linux programmers are cool like that.<\/p>\n

The list below focuses mainly on free and open-source Linux games. Hopefully there is something for everyone, and some new titles readers haven’t explored before. Thanks to the MyGaming readers who pointed out some of these great titles.

Widelands<\/strong> – play game<\/a><\/p>\n

In open source land you can find Widelands, a real-time strategy game greatly inspired by the classic city building and management games, Settlers I and Settlers II.<\/p>\n

0 A.D. <\/strong>– play game<\/a><\/p>\n

0 A.D. is a history based war\/economy simulator and real-time strategy game set in the 1000 year period between 500 B.C. and 500 A.D. It boasts some pretty snazzy graphics, reminiscent of a souped up Age of Empires.<\/p>\n

The Battle for Wesnoth<\/strong> – play game<\/a><\/p>\n

The Battle for Wesnoth is a free turn-based tactical strategy game with a high-fantasy setting. Single player, online multiplayer and hotseat multiplayer modes are supported. The game recently received a big version update, with numerous big changes in store, so it’s a good time to check it out.<\/p>\n

Frogatto<\/strong> – play game<\/a><\/p>\n

From the same team that created The Battle of Wesnoth, comes Frogatto, a cute and challenging side-scrolling platform game starring the eponymous frog. Frogatto does all the usual platforming stuff, and uses his tongue to gobble up enemies, and then spit them out as a projectile weapon.<\/p>\n

Alien Arena<\/strong> – play game<\/a><\/p>\n

Alien Arena is a fast-paced deathmatch arena FPS title set in a retro-sci-fi environment. The dev team aims to combine the best elements of Quake III and Unreal Tournament into this single package.<\/p>\n

Nexuiz <\/strong>– play game<\/a><\/p>\n

Nexuiz is a fast-paced 3D deathmatch game and open-source project created by a team of developers called Alientrap. The first version was released May 31st 2005 and since then it has been downloaded over 1.5 million times.<\/p>\n

Chromium B.S.U.<\/strong> – play game<\/a><\/p>\n

Chromium B.S.U. is a fast paced, arcade-style, top-scrolling space shooter. It’s been around for a while, but it still kicks ass. The visuals still hold up, and if you’re into top-down SHMUP gameplay, it’ll never get old.<\/p>\n

Glest<\/strong> – play game<\/a><\/p>\n

Glest is a free 3D real-time strategy game, where you control the armies of two different factions: Tech, which is mainly composed of warriors and mechanical devices, and Magic, that prefers mages and summoned creatures in the battlefield.<\/p>\n

Warsow <\/strong>– play game<\/a><\/p>\n

Warsow is an FPS multiplayer combat arena game which boasts some cool cel-shaded visuals. The game is set in a futuristic cartoon-like world where rocketlauncher-wielding pigs and lasergun-carrying cyberpunks roam the streets.<\/p>\n

PokerTH <\/strong>– play game<\/a><\/p>\n

PokerTH is a poker simulator focused on the popular Texas Hold’em form of the game. The game supports an online poker playing community and has recently implemented a new player ranking system.<\/p>\n

Warzone 2100<\/strong> – play game<\/a><\/p>\n

In Warzone 2100, an RTS title, players command the forces of The Project in a battle to rebuild the world after mankind has almost been destroyed by nuclear missiles. The game offers campaign, multi-player, and single-player skirmish modes. An extensive tech tree with over 400 different technologies, combined with the unit design system, allows for a wide variety of possible units and tactics.<\/p>\n

Freeciv<\/strong> – play game<\/a><\/p>\n

Freeciv is a recreation of the gameplay found in classic titles Civilisation and Civilisation II. The game is highly customisable and supports a large multiplayer community.<\/p>\n

FreeCol<\/strong> – play game<\/a><\/p>\n

FreeCol is a turn-based strategy game based on the old game, Colonization. The objective of the game is to create an independent nation.  You start with only a few colonists defying the stormy seas in their search for new land. Will you guide them on the Colonization of a New World?<\/p>\n
