If the rumour proves true, then you can probably expect an announcement of the card’s sale date shortly after.

Apparently, comfortable in their performance lead, NVIDIA has postponed the launch of the GTX 980 Ti from May to early in June.

The truth of the matter is that AMD doesn’t have a direct rival for NVIDIA’s offerings, particularly the GTX Titan X, and there really isn’t need to unveil the GTX 980 Ti just yet.

AMD does sell a dual GPU solution, the Radeon R9 295X2, but most enthusiasts prefer a single over a dual GPU for a number of reasons.

As far as the GTX 980 Ti itself is concerned, it’s expected to sport a GM200-310 graphics processing unit. It’s uncertain whether the GM200-310 will have the same configuration as the GM200-400, the processing unit which powers the GeForce GTX Titan X.

Without much of an insight into what exactly is under the hood of this potential new card, the parameters and specifications of the GTX 980 Ti are pretty much an unknown. The best we could do is be certain that it will fall somewhere in-between the GTX 980 and GTX Titan X:

Card

Nvidia GeForce GTX 980

Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 Ti

Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan X

Stream processors

2,048

?

3,072

Core Clock

1,126MHz

?

1000MHz

Boost Clock

1,216MHz

?

1075MHz

Memory Clock

7GHz GDDR5

?

7GHz GDDR5

Memory Bus Width

256 bit

?

VRAM

4GB

?

12GB

Max Digital Resolution

4096 x 2160

5120 x 3200

5120 x 3200

Max VGA Resolution

2048 x 1536

2048 x 1536

2048 x 1536

Power Consumption

165W

?

250W

Price

R7,800 – R12,000

?

R16,000 – R17,800

We’re going to guess that whatever the GTX 980 Ti is, it’ll very likely outdo or at the very least draw with AMD’s forthcoming R9 300 series, AMD’s re-branded HAWAII chips are a certain – FIJI is a bit of an unknown at this point.

The GTX 980 Ti will, of course, be more expensive than the standard GTX 980, but will be a far cheaper option than the GeForce GTX Titan X.
