The continual improvement of broadband technology as well as more efficient bandwidth usage has allowed online gaming to make unprecedented leaps forward, particularly free-to-play gaming.<\/p>\n

According to digital games and playable media data specialists SuperData<\/a>, free-to-play MMO’s are the second largest producer of revenue in the videogaming industry, in the digital space at least \u2013 retail gaming still plays a significant part.<\/p>\n

But if any category is going to be highlighted in SuperData’s Global Games Market Report 2015, it’s mobile gaming.<\/p>\n

At $22.3 billion, mobile gaming is easily the most established sector in videogaming, and is worth a whole $2.6 billion more than the entire retail market for videogames.<\/p>\n

Perhaps the most appealing statistic of them all is the rise of playable media.<\/p>\n

According to SuperData, gamers themselves are becoming some of the biggest contributors to the videogaming industry.<\/p>\n

“Now that gaming is mainstream, audience behavior is different, too. Today, people don\u2019t just consume entertainment but increasingly play an active part in it. Ranging from modding to streaming, from cosplay to competitive gaming, the market for gaming presents a much broader and more diverse mix of opportunities and challenges than ever before,<\/em>” said Joost van Dreunen, CEO, SuperData Research.<\/p>\n

We’re huge fans of the work of modders, streamers, cosplay and everything else in-between, so to see it become such a huge factor in the industry is promising.<\/p>\n

The likes of player created content, eSports, etc. have a long way to go before they’ll be anywhere near the juggernaut that is digital gaming, but it’s a start.<\/p>\n
