{"id":76082,"date":"2015-05-25T13:30:11","date_gmt":"2015-05-25T11:30:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/?p=76082"},"modified":"2015-05-26T09:36:10","modified_gmt":"2015-05-26T07:36:10","slug":"steam-to-add-the-south-african-rand-as-an-official-currency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/pc\/76082-steam-to-add-the-south-african-rand-as-an-official-currency","title":{"rendered":"Steam to add the South African Rand as an official currency"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/steamdb.info\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steam Database<\/a> (otherwise known as SteamDB) is the site to be for virtually all breaking news regarding new Steam developments, and this latest bit of news has to do with us locally.<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SteamDB\/status\/601664846099304448\" target=\"_blank\">tweet<\/a> by SteamDB, users have dug around in code of Steam\u2019s latest beta build and discovered mention of currencies Steam does not currently support.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s assumed that these currencies will be included in future builds of Steam, one of which includes the South African Rand.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The latest Steam Beta build suggests that these new currencies are coming to Steam in the future. <a href=\"http:\/\/t.co\/RLCFXUNOEF\">pic.twitter.com\/RLCFXUNOEF<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; SteamDB (@SteamDB) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SteamDB\/status\/601664846099304448?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 22, 2015<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The question is then, is this a good thing?<\/p>\n<p>A local currency in all likelihood means a higher price tag, although not significantly \u2013 we hope.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa is far from a tax haven, it\u2019s almost the exact opposite in fact, and we can imagine having our local currency represented on Steam having deleterious effects to our wallets.<\/p>\n<p>We just hope that the proposed <a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/news\/62913-sas-new-digital-games-tax-postponed.html\" target=\"_blank\">digital tax proposed for all digital goods remains postponed<\/a>, otherwise we\u2019re going to pay more for Steam games.<\/p>\n<p>That said, Valve does seem to adjust prices according to tax and may very well lower prices when sold in Rand to accommodate.
