{"id":76724,"date":"2015-06-04T12:30:41","date_gmt":"2015-06-04T10:30:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/?p=76724"},"modified":"2015-06-04T12:34:41","modified_gmt":"2015-06-04T10:34:41","slug":"amd-demonstrates-its-fiji-gpu-but-not-radeon-fury-x-nvidia-mustve-scared-them","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/hardware\/76724-amd-demonstrates-its-fiji-gpu-but-not-radeon-fury-x-nvidia-mustve-scared-them","title":{"rendered":"AMD demonstrates its Fiji GPU, but not Radeon Fury X: NVIDIA must&#8217;ve scared them"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>During the Computex trade-show, AMD was only too happy to demonstrate its upcoming flagship GPU, Fiji, but not the card it will be bolted to.<\/p>\n<p>NVIDIA\u2019s latest endeavour into kicking AMD\u2019s butt is the GTX 980 Ti, and <a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/hardware\/76516-nvidias-gtx-980-ti-is-the-4k-gpu-for-you.html\" target=\"_blank\">it\u2019s a fantastic piece of kit<\/a>. It eats 4K gaming for breakfast and doesn\u2019t cost anything like the GTX Titan X, a potent formula.<\/p>\n<p>We wonder if the GTX 980 Ti was enough to deter AMD from demonstrating their high-end flagship card because what AMD\u2019s chief executive, Lisa Su, demonstrated on stage was their Fiji GPU, but not the Radeon Fury Card it\u2019s supposed to power.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_76730\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/AMD-Fiji-GPU-Lisa-Su.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-76730\" class=\"wp-image-76730\" src=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/AMD-Fiji-GPU-Lisa-Su.jpg\" alt=\"AMD Fiji Pro GPU - Lisa Su\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/AMD-Fiji-GPU-Lisa-Su.jpg 800w, https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/AMD-Fiji-GPU-Lisa-Su-230x130.jpg 230w, https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/AMD-Fiji-GPU-Lisa-Su-640x360.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-76730\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">AMD\u2019s Fiji Pro GPU, as held by chief executive of AMD, Lisa Su.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>If AMD\u2019s naming convention seems a little convoluted to you, that\u2019s because it is \u2013 AMD really isn\u2019t in the business of making their naming and numbering scheme understandable.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/wccftech.com\/amd-hbm-fury-x-fastest-world\/\" target=\"_blank\">WCCF Tech<\/a>, rumours suggest that in spite of the Fiji\u2019s raw compute performance as well their rhapsody on the use of <a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/hardware\/75064-amds-next-gpus-launch-soon-to-sport-high-bandwidth-memory.html\" target=\"_blank\">high bandwidth memory in the Fiji<\/a> and all of the benefits contained there within, AMD\u2019s Radeon Fury X, powered by the Fiji XT GPU, may not be able to match NVIDIA\u2019s Titan X, possibly even their GTX 980 Ti.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s down to \u201cpeculiarities around the immature nature of the drivers for the yet unreleased Fiji GPU and the fact that AMD is still tweaking the BIOS settings for the Radeon Fury based cards which are based on it.\u201d So say a few internal sources.<\/p>\n<p>In accordance with NVIDIA\u2019s latest card, AMD may very well be tweaking the clock speeds of their cards for optimal performance.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_76736\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Unofficial-AMD-Radeon-Fury-Snapshot.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-76736\" class=\"wp-image-76736\" src=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Unofficial-AMD-Radeon-Fury-Snapshot.jpg\" alt=\"Unofficial AMD Radeon Fury Snapshot\" width=\"600\" height=\"430\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-76736\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Unofficial AMD Radeon Fury Snapshot<\/p><\/div>\n<p>For the moment, many have predicted that even with just 4GB of VRAM, the Radeon Fury X will outperform the GTX Titan X, and almost certainly its spin-off, the GTX 980 Ti.<\/p>\n<p>After all, it sports 4096 GPU Cores (more commonly referred to as Shaders), 512 GB\/s of memory bandwidth and approximately 8.5 TFLOPS of compute performance. Compared to the Titan X\u2019s meagre 336 GB\/s of memory bandwidth and a dismal (sarcasm for those who can\u2019t read the room) 7 TFLOPS of compute performance.<\/p>\n<p>The thing is, real world inefficiencies, video game development tendencies and coding variations in no way translates into direct 1:1 performance figures. The GTX Titan X is still in the running until we see the actual Radeon Fury X\u2019s performance.<\/p>\n<p>And what about the smaller Fiji Pro GPU? How will the Radeon Fury compete? We can\u2019t wait to find out, and how will it price locally.
