Who needs photorealism? Not when you have the awesomeness of cel-shading to cover up dodgy polygons and even dodgier models.<\/p>\n<p>Need a demonstration of the superiority of cel-shading? The look of 90s adventure games evoke a similar nostalgia factor for modern gamers as 16-bit platformers do, and for good reason.<\/p>\n<p>With a focus on puzzle-solving, the graphical demands of these games were never particularly strenuous.<\/p>\n<p>This meant developers could focus on creating rich backgrounds, such as those of <em>Broken Sword<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_76868\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Planescape-Torment.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-76868\" class=\"wp-image-76868\" src=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Planescape-Torment.jpg\" alt=\"Planescape: Torment\" width=\"600\" height=\"341\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Planescape-Torment.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Planescape-Torment-230x130.jpg 230w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-76868\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Planescape: Torment<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Few genres are more immersive than RPGs, so it\u2019s natural that these types of games have benefited the most from the advances in graphical capabilities.<\/p>\n<p>At the turn of the century, graphics weren\u2019t even close to being there.<\/p>\n<p>This means that third-person viewpoint RPGs of the day such as <em>Morrowind<\/em> and <em>Deus Ex<\/em> look much poorer in comparison to top-down RPGs like <em>Baldur\u2019s Gate<\/em> and <em>Planescape: Torment<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_76866\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/The-Legend-of-Zelda-The-Wind-Waker.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-76866\" class=\"wp-image-76866\" src=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/The-Legend-of-Zelda-The-Wind-Waker.jpg\" alt=\"The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker\" width=\"600\" height=\"337\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/The-Legend-of-Zelda-The-Wind-Waker.jpg 900w, https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/The-Legend-of-Zelda-The-Wind-Waker-230x130.jpg 230w, https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/The-Legend-of-Zelda-The-Wind-Waker-640x360.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-76866\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Zelda series\u2019 willingness to try out different visual styles while still remaining uniquely Hyrulean have meant the games have generally stood the test of time.<\/p>\n<p>Some titles do, however, look better today than others. <em>A Link to the Past<\/em> remains one of the best-looking (and just plain best) games for SNES, but our vote for the most stunning is <em>Wind Waker<\/em>, which still looks spectacular 13 years after it first came out.<\/p>\n<p>The reason? Yes, it\u2019s cel-shading again.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_76864\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Marvel-vs-Capcom.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-76864\" class=\"wp-image-76864\" src=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Marvel-vs-Capcom.jpg\" alt=\"Marvel vs. Capcom\" width=\"600\" height=\"284\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-76864\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Marvel vs. Capcom<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Whether <em>Street Fighter<\/em> or <em>Mortal Kombat<\/em> is your classic fighting game of choice, there\u2019s no denying that Capcom wins out in the battle of the graphics.<\/p>\n<p>Early <em>Mortal Kombat\u2019s<\/em> choice of more realistic graphics and muted colours has aged worse than <em>Street Fighter\u2019s<\/em> colourful anime style and dynamic backgrounds. What else can we say except \u201cHadouken\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s impossible to list every game that still looks good in a couple of posts, so we had to leave out many beautiful titles.<\/p>\n<p>What games do you think we should have included?
