If you\u2019ve downloaded Windows 10, having perhaps used our guide to jump in the queue<\/a>, or as one of the millions who pre-registered for your free copy<\/a>, then you were part of a rather large internet movement.<\/p>\n

According to a blog post<\/a> by Microsoft themselves, Windows 10 has already reached 14 million devices, and they\u2019ve yet to reach everyone who pre-registered:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile we now have more than 14 million devices running Windows 10, we still have many more upgrades to go before we catch up to each of you that reserved your upgrade.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s a lot of downloads, and it\u2019s exactly why Microsoft reserved a combined 40 TB\/s of bandwidth<\/a> with all key content delivery networks (CDNs) across the world.<\/p>\n

Want to know just how much Windows 10 downloads allotted to? \u201cInternet Phenomena Blog\u201d Sandvine<\/a> suggests 8% at peak.<\/p>\n

Small a number as that might seem, it\u2019s more than 10 Tb\/s of data. Moreover, keep in mind that Sandvine sampled the North American Fixed Access Network, so those numbers should be taken with a grain of salt.<\/p>\n

It would have been a heck of a lot more if Windows 10 wasn\u2019t being released in waves and made available to everyone at once as a result.<\/p>\n

At the end of it all, Microsoft hopes to reach more than 1 billion devices, so waves is really the only way to do it. Imagine the traffic if all 1 billion devices opted for the download at once.<\/p>\n

That would QUITE LITERALLY break the internet.<\/p>\n
