{"id":79375,"date":"2015-07-31T13:30:01","date_gmt":"2015-07-31T11:30:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/?p=79375"},"modified":"2015-07-31T14:05:40","modified_gmt":"2015-07-31T12:05:40","slug":"u-s-building-first-exascale-supercomputer-thats-514033-ps4s","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/hardware\/79375-u-s-building-first-exascale-supercomputer-thats-514033-ps4s","title":{"rendered":"U.S. building first Exascale Supercomputer: that\u2019s 514,033 PS4s"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Have you heard of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.top500.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">TOP500 list<\/a> of the world\u2019s fastest supercomputers?<\/p>\n<p>In case you haven\u2019t, it\u2019s exactly what it describes, a list of the current top 500 supercomputers \u2013 that is, those with the most raw compute power.<\/p>\n<p>For the most part, it\u2019s a U.S. dominated list. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.top500.org\/blog\/lists\/2015\/06\/press-release\/\" target=\"_blank\">United States currently holds 233 of the 500 spots<\/a>, an impressive feat no doubt.<\/p>\n<p>Funny thing is, at one point, in November of 2013 to be precise, they held 265 spots. Combine that with the fact that they haven\u2019t held the top spot for a number of years now, and the U.S. has obviously become antsy.<\/p>\n<p>For the moment, the honour of fastest supercomputer goes China\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.top500.org\/system\/177999\" target=\"_blank\">TIANHE-2<\/a> (Milkyway-2) supercomputer, which has held the spot since 2013.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_79379\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Chinese-Tianhe-2-Supercomputer.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-79379\" class=\"size-full wp-image-79379\" src=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Chinese-Tianhe-2-Supercomputer.jpg\" alt=\"Chinese Tianhe-2 Supercomputer\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Chinese-Tianhe-2-Supercomputer.jpg 640w, https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Chinese-Tianhe-2-Supercomputer-230x130.jpg 230w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-79379\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">China&#8217;s Tianhe-2 Supercomputer.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Thanks to its 3.12 million cores and 1 million plus gigabytes of RAM, TIANHE-2 is capable of an impressive 33,862.7 teraflops (or <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/FLOPS\" target=\"_blank\">TFlop\/s<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>33.862 petaflops is insane, but The United States is about to blow that figure out of the water.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.extremetech.com\/extreme\/211247-obama-signs-executive-order-to-build-first-ever-exascale-supercomputer\" target=\"_blank\">Extreme Tech<\/a>, President of The United States, Barack Obama, has given the go-ahead to build the world\u2019s first exascale (1,000 petaflops) supercomputer.<\/p>\n<p>Actually, the order tasks the creation of a \u201ccoordinated federal strategy for high-performance computing (HPC) research, development, and deployment\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The point is to found a National Strategic Computing Initiative (NSCI) that will eventually go on to design and build the exascale supercomputer.<\/p>\n<p>To put that into perspective for you.
