{"id":79441,"date":"2015-08-02T10:00:09","date_gmt":"2015-08-02T08:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/?p=79441"},"modified":"2015-08-02T10:21:56","modified_gmt":"2015-08-02T08:21:56","slug":"nvidia-recall-8-inch-shield-tablet-its-a-fire-hazard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/business\/79441-nvidia-recall-8-inch-shield-tablet-its-a-fire-hazard","title":{"rendered":"NVIDIA recall 8-inch Shield Tablet: it&#8217;s a fire hazard"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NVIDIA has decided, rather appropriately we might add, to recall their 8-inch <a href=\"http:\/\/shield.nvidia.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Shield Tablet<\/a> because they may just start a fire.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently, one of the batteries in use in a particular batch of tablets is prone to overheating and, eventually, becoming a fire hazard.<\/p>\n<p>You might think that NVIDIA is just being proactive, lawsuits being what they are these days, but there are already reports of damage due to overheating.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cpsc.gov\/en\/Recalls\/2015\/Nvidia-Recalls-Tablet-Computers\/\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission<\/a>, four reports have been filed thus far:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;NVIDIA has received four reports of batteries overheating due to thermal runaway, including two reports of damage to flooring<strong>.<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As a result, a voluntary recall is in effect, the details of which are available at this <a href=\"http:\/\/tabletrecall.expertproductinquiry.com\/registration\" target=\"_blank\">dedicated website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a lot of information regarding the recall, how to identify a potentially faulty unit and what to do should you discover a faulty unit.<\/p>\n<p>The just of it is, if you navigate to the <strong>Settings<\/strong> app on your tablet and select the <strong>About<\/strong> <strong>tablet<\/strong> option, selecting <strong>Status<\/strong> thereafter, you&#8217;ll be able to see your <strong>Battery<\/strong> status.<\/p>\n<p>If your battery is titled &#8220;<strong>B01<\/strong>&#8220;, your unit is <strong>unaffected<\/strong>. If it&#8217;s &#8220;<strong>Y01<\/strong>&#8220;, for &#8220;yes, it&#8217;s going to burn your house down&#8221;, then you unit is <strong>affected<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/NVIDIA-Shield-Tablet-Recall-Battery-Type.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-79449 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/NVIDIA-Shield-Tablet-Recall-Battery-Type.jpg\" alt=\"NVIDIA Shield Tablet Recall - Battery Type\" width=\"375\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So far, in the U.S. and Canada, around 88, 000 tablets have been recalled. The arson-inclined batch was sold between July 2014 and July 2015, so the chances of someone in South Africa getting a hold of an affected unit is remote \u2013 the tablets are only just appearing locally.<\/p>\n<p>That said, if you own one, you might as well check. You don&#8217;t want to have happen to you what happened to the <a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/news\/76130-an-rv-is-allegedly-burnt-down-by-an-unattended-wii.html\" target=\"_blank\">owner of that RV<\/a> when his Wii went rogue.<\/p>\n<p>No other NVIDIA devices are affected by the fault, so there really isn&#8217;t any need to panic&#8230; unless you smell smoke.
