Samsung has started\u00a0producing what it says is the industry\u2019s first 256-gigabit (Gb), three-dimensional Vertical NAND (V-NAND) flash memory.<\/p>\n
The chips are based on 48 layers of 3-bit multi-level-cell arrays for use in solid state drives (SSDs).<\/p>\n
This is the third generation of Samsung\u2019s V-NAND flash memory technology, and the company said it doubles the density of conventional 128Gb NAND flash chips.<\/p>\n
Samsung\u2019s 256Gb 3D V-NAND flash equates to 32 gigabytes (GB) of storage on a single die, and the Korean electronics maker said the new chip will easily double the capacity of Samsung\u2019s existing SSDs.<\/p>\n
Currently,\u00a0Samsung offers a top-of-the-range 2TB SSD<\/strong><\/a>, meaning\u00a0it could \u201ceasily\u201d double that to 4TB in its new SSD line-up.<\/p>\n Samsung plans to produce third-generation V-NAND tech throughout the remainder of 2015.<\/p>\n Before you get too excited, keep in mind that Samsung\u2019s 2TB 850 Evo<\/a> and Pro<\/a> SSDs currently retail for R12, 222<\/strong> and R15, 426<\/strong>, respectively, at RebelTech.<\/p>\n Of course, their 2TB SSDs<\/a> are relatively new, and so were always going to be pricey \u2013 they\u2019re 2TB SSDs after all. But even their 1TB drives cost a pretty penny.<\/p>\n Their 1TB 850 Pro costs R8000+<\/strong> at online retailers like Wootware<\/a> and RebelTech<\/a>, and the much more affordable 850 Evo is still R5, 928<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Much as we hate to tread on your dreams, we thought we\u2019d emphasise just how expensive these 4TB SSDs will undoubtedly cost.<\/p>\n For the moment, high capacity requirements will largely be fulfilled by hard disk drives for the good majority of us.<\/p>\n If you\u2019re positive you want an SSD, but are a little cash strapped, we would recommend a more affordable range like OCZ\u2019s Trion 100s<\/a>.<\/p>\n A 120GB Trion 100 will set you back a reasonable R814<\/strong> if you purchase it from RebelTech<\/a>.<\/p>\n The world\u2019s first 4 GHz DDR4 memory module: courtesy of G.Skill<\/a><\/p>\n Meet 3D Xpoint Memory: it\u2019s 1000x faster than conventional SSD memory<\/a><\/p>\n
